If you have Steam Cloud enabled, or you use Microsoft OneDrive, you should disable both, and remove OneDrive from your PC.
Assuming you do NOT use OneDrive, You can try "resetting" your game, by going to your Documents folder, then the MyGames folder, and delete the Fallout4 folder inside. When you restart the game from the Steam Library, this will get re-created with fresh files.
Once you have the Launcher open, go to settings/options, click advanced, then turn off Weapons Debris, and set the rest of the settings to Ultra, or their highest settings, save and close the Launcher. Now you can open your Fallout .ini files (in the new Documents/mygames/Fallout4 folder) and manually edit them for your modern hardware and actual monitor size.
You kinda have to get into the game for weapon debris to cause a crash.
NVidia can have issues with one of their .dll files that cause that crash. There is a @#$%load of "fixes" for that .dll issue. I treid dozens of them for months and none of them ever worked. In the end I "fixed" it by using Vulkan Render (which open a whole bunch of graphic glitches, but it ran.)
Using any sort of mod that raises the number of threads used can also cause a bunch of crashes. Reducing the number of threads brings stability back.
Oh and the best way to stop chasing "fixes" is go install Buffout and get a crashlog and have the people on the Buffout 4 forums read it for you.
I'm playing on survival mode so I just lost an hour of gameplay. Actually if the game crashes like this I'm gonna say its unbeatable on survival mode. I don't remember this game crashing on me so much in the past, but then again I haven't played a Bethesda game since 2017....
So what I suggest is to go get yourself the Survival Options mod, then turn on Save on Wait. This means you will have the option to wait an hour in any chair and save WITHOUT losing your adrenaline, throwing your sleep off, and enacting a disease check that comes with normal sleeping.
Then while you are at it, throw in a mod like Darker Nights where it is dark (as in near pitch black) from like 5PM to 6AM.
Toss in True Storms and turn on the Ghoul spans during radstorms for random unexpected surprises.
Is your 14700k OC'ed in BIOS or in Intel XTU by chance?
This game crashed on my 14700k, right to desktop (its mildly OC'ed via Intel XTU App).
While this isn't Unreal Engine, 14700k and Up CPU's aren't the most stable when OC'ed or BIOS OC'ed via Mobo manufacturer.
If it's OC'ed via BIOS, just be sure you have Intel's Limits enforced. If by XTU, tame the wattage on P1/P2 at 250Watts or execute the default profile and retry fallout for a few mins and see if you crash to Desktop etc.
Problem solved doing this! Legend :D
Maybe Bethesda should fix their tech instead of letting fan boys gas light others on steam forums.
I installed the patch and the game still crashes. So no, nothing has improved :-)
If you're playing survival it's good practice to try and sleep, 1 hour is risky not just because of random crashes which do happen sometimes even if your system is set up perfectly, but you could of course get killed and lose all that progress anyway.
I too play only in survival mode, and I understand the pain of losing a lot of progress, but 9/10 it's fine if you plan out your route and remember sleeping bag and beds throughout the world. The game is certainly playable with survival mode, as stated in the first post, if someone is crashing over and over in a manner which is repeatable and predictable, then that normally indicates an issue at the players end and not the game.
Not sure why some people thought that deserved jester awards, but thanks for the free points anyway.
