Feral ghouls are more-or-less your zombies.

Though, rather than being dead humans magically reanimated, they’re humans who were exposed to an immense amount of radiation that magically turned them into “ghouls”, who then slowly lost their minds and devolved into these hyper aggressive, “feral” variants that are driven only by their most basic animalistic instincts.

They’re more “28 Days Later” zombies than traditional “George Romero” zombies - not the dead brought back to “life”, but the living who’ve have been infected or changed by something that has turned them into ultra-violent abominations that only possess the most basic of cognitive functions.

Feral ghouls are pretty much zombies. Not technically dead, but heavily decayed, feral, they move all janky, and they come in groups.

Lexington sure was fun...

Ghouls are not zombies, they still have their cognition (more or less) in-tact. Feral ghouls however have lost their identity and their free will, becoming primitive mindless drones. That may sound like zombies but there is a distinct difference.

Ghoulification is a mutation that occurs when a human with certain genomes is exposed to high levels of radiation, whereas humans without it die from radiation poisoning.

The physical changes in their anatomy stem from radiation. The appearance of their epidermis, extreme dehydration, hair loss, loss of extremities and sterilization, including their prolonged lifespan stems from one or more mutations within the autonomic nervous system and deterioration of connective tissues, fat tissues, etc. Resulting with the exposed muscles and wrinkle like appearance. Depending on their psyche, exposure levels and other factors, the rate of their transformation process and their deterioration differs from one ghoul to the next. Eventually their brain will deteriorate to the point of them becoming feral. The degeneration into feral state is called ferocious post-necrotic dystrophy. The loss of higher brain function, cognitive thinking and increased level of aggression suggest severe frontal lobe impairment.

The definition of feral is being in a wild state, untamed. And suggests the feral nature is bestial, savage, ferocious. Feral ghouls have lost all humanity and themselves. Acting on instinct alone. They are no more than creatures. They attack anyone in their proximity that isn't a ghoul, feral or not, because they likely cannot tell the difference by sight alone.

It is the fate of all ghouls and if you speak to them, some admit they can feel themselves slip away and they grieve the loss of their friends who have gone feral. It is inevitable. Which is why ghouls are outcasts and people in general are afraid to live with them. But their flesh does not rot and the condition isn't transmittable.

Feral Ghouls are drawn to anything emitting radiation because of the regenerative effects. Glowing ghouls are ghouls that have lost their ability to filter out radioactive particles and the accumulation of radiation results in bioluminescence. It's no coincidence that most of them are found near nuclear waste, they've basically been bathing in it. Any person who does not wear radiation suits or power armor, will succumb to radiation poisoning. Consumables that have radiation resistance offer short and limited protection against glowing ghouls and if you don't consume radaway, then the poisoning will lead to death.

Before the Great War, plenty of doomsday-preppers chose to expose themselves to radiation and supposedly those who survived the exposure turned into ghouls, in preparation for the war. I suppose they had knowledge of the experimental radiation resistant drug. It's the same drug that Hancock and Eddie Winter used on themselves. Most ghouls however were created after the nuclear blast.

I love zombies and have seen a great number of zombie films spanning decades upon decades. They made their way to video games in the 80s and there is no shortage of zombie related video games. They are a popular subject, but in my humble opinion... I'm glad they didn't make it to Fallout 4. It just doesn't seem fitting.

In every type of media the origin of zombies is the direct cause of infections; such as viral, bacterial, fungal or parasitic. But the original zombie myth comes from Hattian folklore as deterring people from committing suicide. Then it evolved into Voodoo magic and curses.

There are plenty of examples of zombies in real life though, but fortunately mammals are not in danger from any of those. The closest humans have gotten to becoming zombies are xylazine users. Worst side effect from regular use is necrosis.

Have you actually paid attention to what is in the game?

Feral ghouls are like zombies. I can call a cat, a cat or a feline. Does not change what the cat is.

Fallout 4 loading screens: "While they can easily be mistaken for zombies, Feral Ghouls are actually horribly irradiated humans whose brains have rotted away, causing madness."

Which sounds like a zombie.

But that doesn't make them Zombies. Infection isn't viral, bacterial, fungal, parasitical or voodoo, and it isn't transmittable. Not to mention, not everyone can become ghouls. That is the key difference.

Edit: You call a cat, a cat or a feline. Does not change what the cat is. So, if a person acts like a cat and believes they are a cat, does that make them cats?

I guess that's true. Freedom of choice is all well and good, but humanity might have taken a step too far in the wrong direction.

Hah, sure enough. Seems like it's become a requirement these days and then apologize profusely if you can't see the resemblance.

No. Never. Not even in the older games before Bethesda acquired the rights to Fallout. The aggression of feral ghouls is because they are in a feral state. The deterioration of their brain has damaged all parts of it

- Damage to the frontal lobe and prefrontal cortex impairs behavior, cognitive thinking, planning, problem solving and decision-making. Difficulty processing emotion and lack of empathy. Increases irritability, impulsiveness and is association with increased aggression and violence.
- Damage to the temporal, parietal lobe and hippocampus impairs the ability to learn, recognizing objects and people, understand spoken words and retain new information. Is also associated with memory loss.
