Gene, and his junkyard dog.
So, i was recently interested in aquireing the junkyard dogs, however, i cannot find gene, the junkyard dog itself is in an alleyway in concord near the civic enterance, and never moves from there, he has been there for many ingame days so i doubt he's going to respawn with gene anytime soon, what's causing this issue, and has anybody else come across this "bug"?

its random encounter & it can happen again, but its matter of luck :D
tried codes moveto play & player, moveto & hes ref ID, but nothing happens, so i believe he despawns so he doesn't exist after u lose site of him, u can't move to NPC that doesn't exist, at 1point he re-spawns, that's my guess, but ppl have seen him more then once

You can get them easier if ya have Far Harbor, a guy thier sell them too.

Forget all that, just use the Dog Cages in the Wasteland Settlement expansion.

Random encounters are not guaranteed to happen in a playthrough. I never ran into Gene in my first playthrough, and that was over 90 hours.

Walking along roads increases the chance of you finding Gene, which is where he usually spawns, especially in the northwest part of the map, where you're likely to explore early game. I've even encountered him right by the Red Rocket next to Sanctuary. I also once encountered him on the railroad tracks near Tenpines Bluff, where there's a random encounter point by the derailed train cars. He can spawn multiple times in a game, or not at all.

Also, be sure to have something that boosts your charisma. He will back out of selling you his dog if your charisma isn't high enough. I think it needs to be at least 7 to get a decent chance of letting you buy his dog. I've tried to get him to sell me it with 5 charisma and he wouldn't budge. Had to pan out of the conversation with my pipboy and put on my charisma-boosting outfit.

But if you have the dlc, there are the other options the the posters above mentioned.

In my first playthrough, I met him a couple of times and bought dogs, this time, he wouldnt sell me a dog, and I too have got a junkyard dog hanging around Oberland station on its own.
Any luck with the Brahmin lady? I saw her up the road from Jamaica Plain a few times on my first playthrough, but not this time.

In all of my early playthroughs I never saw him, probably due to fast traveling.
Then in a playthrough on survival I met him 10 times.
This playthrough I have met him three times so far.

All those encounters were in different places. But almost always on a road.

If you have Wastland Workshop and/or Far Harbor DLCs, there are ways of getting a dogs for your settlements without Gene.

In WW, you can build a dog trap (also a cat trap, as both add to happiness). There's a dice roll whenever you open the dog trap, with a chance of getting a feral dog instead of a junkyard dog, so save before opening.

In Far Harbor (SPOILER!) there's a friendly (if you select the "calm down" diaglogue) NPC super mutant that lives at the site of a crashed plane. Every game week or so he'll have a named dog to sell you that you can send to any settlement, not just the 4 FH ones. He also sells wolves and mutant hounds, but though they add to a settlement's defense they don't bring happiness...

♥♥♥♥ that noise, get deathclaws as guard dogs baby!

I got 2 mythic deathclaws in my drive-in, it's hilarious when someone attacks.

Just be sure you have no cats or dogs in said settlement and try for Deathclaw pet...Deathclaw kills them...XD

I had Gene show up at the Drive-in but I failed the speech check to buy a dog, so he left, but the dog stayed and he's still there. Gene won't respawn though.

Next time I saw him, maybe 35 levels later was Fairline Estates. He sold me a dog after I popped grape mentats.

Except Dogs don't need pacifiers to remain civil!
Let them out of the cage and they're instantly friendly.

Unless something has changed then this is not true. As long as you have the Beta Wave Tuner going then only some captured animals are hostile to one another, and nothing goes after dogs, cats, and gorillas AFAIK. Some combos are incompatible and will fight to the death, like Deathclaw and Yao Guai, Yao Guai and Radstag, and so on, but I have had Deathclaws and dogs in the same settlement without issues.

No ones kills Cats and Dogs... But everything else is endangered if you have multiple Creatures, i don't know what can co-exist, i made a Cage for each Species and opened all togehter as all was filled.... Everything killed each other, only Cats and Dogs stayed alive...

1 thing more, J dog doesn't take population, but if u have ch10 pop limit is 22, & if u have 22 ppl in all settlements u cant add dog anywhere, so its better to keep some settlements at 21, then u can play around with them, if drive in is full for example & u want to add dog there, then temporarily send 1 settler to another settlement

Not entirely true. In Far Harbor I had Trashcan Carla go hostile because of a rad dog I purchased and then after I got rid of him because of a cat I captured. This caused the whole settlement to go hostile towards me. Only mod I am running is the mod that alerts you to settlements under attack. This has only happened in FH settlements. No issues with the ones in the Commonwealth.
