what happens if I fail a settlement radiant quest before I own it?
This radiant quests are getting ridiculous. I'm around 25 hours into the game, clearing out areas toward Bunker Hill when I got THIS quest from Preston.

"Raider Troubles at Somerville Place"

Ohh nice...it's just at the OTHER side of map! ♥♥♥♥. Don't think I can make it there alive before it expires.

I know a settlement I own would lose happiness and things get broken if I fail a quest like this. Does anyone know what'd happen when I fail a unowned settlement radiant quest? Do I lose the settlement permanently or there is a chance to retry?

I'm not sure if this type of quest has a time limit anymore. I failed one way back when the game was first released but it took about 2 weeks in game before the timer ran out. Nothing happened other than a while later I went to that settlement which just gave me the same quest again. I havent failed another since then and have left them unanswered for a considerable length of time.

...guess there is only one way to find out. Thanks for the comment.

Yeah, I've played over 1000 hours and have never had an initial settlement quest time out. The only ones that have timed out (resulting in failure) are the "Defend XXX against attack" and the Kidnapping quesst. And I've gotten the kidnapping quest twice as an "initial" quest to get them to join the Minutement and those two times I took quite some time before getting there and it didn't time out. It seems the kidnapping quests you get once a settlement is already under your control time out pretty quickly. I dunno, but it seems really quick to me, like less than 3 or 4 in game days. I've failed several of those, sometimes because it was very hard for me to get there in time since I never use fast travel.

You can also jusst kill them.
You don't need the current settlers.
You can kill them and take it.
So its all good.

That.....never crossed my mind. Don't know I should thank you for the idea or be taken aback by your ruthless solution.

...I'll thank you. Already losing patience thanks to these endless radiant quests, nightmare for a completionist gamer. Still looking for a mod to turn them off, or at very least stop those settlement attacks that keep poping up.

Actually listening to the minutemen radio and doing the radient quests it gives you gives a lot of xp and some companions gain favor towards you if you're going for their perk.

uh...no. I'm going solo. Sneak build. Companions might go stealth with me but if enemy get close, instead of back off and hide with me, they go tigger happy. :steamfacepalm:
