.45-70 Ammo
Can I find it randomly? (Especially with the "Find more Ammo" perk) Or am I forced to go to the DLC Area to get it? I would really like to be able to use legendary Lever Action Rifle I find without being forced to start the DLC before i even finished the main storyline.

i never managed to find any in the commonwealth (i dont have the find more ammo perk btw) so i just spawned in 200 bullets, runs out really fast for me. i think its only in the dlc area

MY entire time in Far Harbor, I found a bunch of lever action rifles, but left Far Harbor with a whole 9 rounds of .45-70 ammo.

That's about how many rounds of that ammo I ended up with in FONV too

Eh, NV .45-70 Gov't was intentionally rare as the guns that used it were actually pretty great, Far Harbor .45-70 Gov't feels poorly implemented as even a puny Hunting Rifle have more damage than the Lever-Action Rifle(and the Combat Rifle outdoes both in DPS due to firing literally 10 times faster than the Hunting Rifle), so the rarity isn't justified with power.

I have a feeling it's missing from the loot lists.

The higher levels of the Scrounger perk (before it was fixed by the unofficial patch), were completely missing shotgun shells and other ammo

yeah its only in FH, you can find some rounds here and there on trappers, but my main source of those 45-70 rounds is either allen, or the other merchant in FH, as well as Erikson sells them too.

Totally agree.

I'm atm playing Stealth+Sniping And if I look at all the weapons I got, It seems like neither the Combat Rifle nor the Hunting rifle reach the Lever in terms of one-hit damage. But then again, im atm collecting some perk points to hopefull be able to skill Science! and Upgrade the Gauss for simple sniping so,... I dunno. I kinda wanted to use the Lever.

Lever action rifle is fine, does more damage and fires faster than hunting rifle and has quite good hipfire accuracy.
The only places you get decent amounts of .45-70 ammo are the merchants in Far Harbor (and Acaida and the Nucleus if they are still around), so stock up before leaving.

Shame, I love lever-action guns.

Seems like regular merchants should start stocking the new ammo when you return. That's how it worked with the New Vegas DLC, for example. Seems like an oversight if they don't here.

I just did a survival run, ended up level 80. Didn't do Far Harbor, but ended up with 2 legendary rifles that use the ammo, never found any of the ammo or a vendor who sells them. I also found a harpoon launcher or something, but no ammo.

I was able to buy some from one my lvl 3 weapon shops.

Um, no, no the HR is not more powerful than the LAR when fully modded.

Sure, the base is 37 for ht HR and 35 for the LAR ... but it's that "fully modded" that really counts.

.308 Hunting Rifle, with:
  • Calibrated Powerful Receiver
  • Long Ported Barrel
  • Marksman's Stock
  • Large Quick Magazine
  • (Any) Long Scope
  • Suppressor
... has Damage (55) / Rate of Fire (3), Range (185), Accuracy (112) and weighs (18.1, or 18.4 with a Large Recon scope)

.50 Hunting Rifle, with:
  • .50 Receiver
  • Long Ported Barrel
  • Marksman's Stock
  • Large Quick Magazine
  • (Any) Long Scope
  • Suppressor
... has Damage (64) / Rate of Fire (4), Range (185), Accuracy (111) and weighs (18.7, or 19.0 with a Large Recon scope)

.308 Combat Rifle, with:
  • .308 Receiver
  • Long Ported Barrel
  • Recoil CompensatingStock
  • Large Quick Magazine
  • (Any) Long Scope
  • Suppressor
... has Damage (57) / Rate of Fire (33), Range (189), Accuracy (74) and weighs (18.8, or 19.1 with a Large Recon scope)

Lever Action Rifle, with:
  • Advanced Receiver
  • Long Ported Barrel
  • Marksman's Stock
  • (Any) Long Scope
  • Suppressor
... has Damage (134) / Rate of Fire (6), Range (176), Accuracy (110) and weighs (15.7, or 16.0 with a Large Recon scope)

Let's put that up in a single block, shall we?

... : HR // HR+ // CR // LAR
Damge : 55 // 64 // 57 // 134
RoF : 3 // 4 // 33 // 6
Range : 185 // 185 // 189 // 176
Acc : 112 // 111 // 74 // 110
Lbs. : 18.1 // 18.7 // 18.8 // 15.7
Ammo : 10 // 10 // 40 // 5

CONCLUSION:

The lever action rifle loses some range (9 or 13), has less ammo capacity, and loses a tiny sliver of accuracy (1 or 2) against it's best competitors in each category.

But it weighs less (averaging just shy of three pounds lighter), and does better than double the per-shot damage of any of the other three.

It's rate of fire is 50% to 100% better than either Hunting Rifle (the CR's rate of fire cannot be competed with).

...

Overall, for sniping? LEVER ACTION, all the way. Especially against enemies with high resistances. The maths for that are way mor ecomplex than I want to dive into now, but suffice to say: the LAR rifle will still be doing as much damage, against a Resistance of 60-ish, as the other three will be doing against completely unarmored targets.

Without mods all the DLC stuff is confined to the DLC area.

You'll need to get a mod to import Far Harbor ammo and stuff to the Commonwealth.

I use this one: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/13900/?

My .50 Cal LAR sniper rifle is incredible fully modified. Of course, I have maxed out non-Auto damage perks, silence weapon damage perks, bloody mess perks, head shot perks, sneak attack perks, etc. While doing the institute ending, I needed to take out the BoS guarding Liberty Prime at the airport in survival mode. I wouldn't trade my LAR sniper rifle for any other weapon in a do or die scenario.
GM Pax Jun 14, 2016 @ 2:56pm
Well, I ignored Perks as they'd have the same proportional impact on all four (silenced) rifles.

And that .50 receiver you have is from a mod - I stuck to official-only options for all four rifles. :)
