Raider Settlement Food issues, spoilers. Need information!
I got 5 raider settlements and 9 providing for them yet they are complaining about food issues.

Did the base population of the providing settlement matter? Because you can't increase it or fix anything after you force them to provide for you. Should I have built it up before bringing them under my raiders control?

From what I've gathered from playing for hours and setting up a network of raider outposts and vassals, here's what I've figured out.

When you take a settlement for raiders, the population is replaced by raiders which can do anything that normal settlers do but lose happiness when they farm. When you hover your cursor over a raider settlement on the map in your pipboy, every settlement within range of it will get a symbol on it. Make one of those settlements your vassal and it will send food to the raider settlement and I think it sends money to a chest in Nuka World, at your resturant house. However you lose control of the vassal.

Raider settlements can't have a caravan system connecting them but seem to share resources except food. Food is sent to the raider settlements by vassals, or you can place food in the workbench yourself. I believe water is shared.

Raider outposts get attacked but instead of raiders, it's by The Brotherhood or The Minutemen. If you're not hostile to those factions then the attackers won't be enemies of you, but will be attacked by your raiders and the turrets you set up in your settlement.

If you take 8 settlements for the raiders, you unlock a tribute chest. You have to assign a raider to it. Periodically it will fill with food, caps, weapons, armor, junk items, etc. It's similar to the chests in the parks in nuka world.

All that and you didn't explain anything that was asked.

We know about replacing people with raiders. You literally see it happen.
We know about range of vassals. They tell us about that.
We know about the tribute chest and the one for 8 settlements. They tell us about that.

None of that answered questions posed in this thread. Seriously.

Does having a vassal with 20 pop that produces 120 food give the raiders more food or caps then a craphole with 2 guys and 12 food?! How literally does the food system work for raiders, and don't bloody talk about the in range crap or just say yes because it makes sense. You can't build up these settlements after turning them into a vassal so that makes a damn big difference. The fact that you can't further improve them leads me to think the population and production don't matter. Because it's bloody unclear I made this thread.

Stop posting random information not relating to the questions at hand please.

edit:
And don't say I asked you to post that, I asked that stuff related to the thread be posted and none of that is.

Exactly Locklave. I was told its by the other settlements supplying. not only does it not seem to be working at all. but my supply lines show one supply going from one raider settlement to another. its pretty weird. I cant keep playing unless they get food. my booze and money isn't working for much longer keeping them happy.

Ok, I actually went around to my raider settlements and looked at the food in their workbenches. Coastal cottage is being fed by 1 small farm with 3 farmers. It had 10 carrots in it. Down south I checked one that had Warwick Homestead and maybe more than just that farm feeding it and it was filled with a ton of food, like 36 mutfruit, and lots of other assorted things. I went to another well fed one and it had 40 corn in it in addition to other assorted foods. Outposts out of range had no food. It seems the food production of the vassal does come into play.

Hopefully someone will dig into the mechanics of how this all functions at it's core. I'm having food problems randomly pop up for no reason then go away again for no reason.

It seems and I could be wrong from my tests that a built up settlement provides more food for raiders, but given that the state of them having food is bouncing all over I can't know if that's indeed the case.

This just made me think, if food is handled by vassals in range how does the nuka world Red rocket raider settlement get food? Nothing is in range.

This seems to present a rather large issue as you can't improve vassal settlements after the fact. Assuming this is the case. Refer to my above post.

I'm actually running some tests. Taking a brake, but had three settlements fed by a vessel with 12 food. Constant complaints of food, none in workshop. I just rebuilt that settlement it now has 48 food, when I get back on I'll take it wait some time and see I'd I got any food yet.

The food output of the vessel settlement may matter it seems. I waited 48hrs, but my gang was complaining about food, and it was red. When I asked Shank though, he told me I needed more beds, and to check my pipboy. Each of my camps grew by 3 to 4 raiders. Previous time there was no growth, and food was still what Shank told me. I wanted to fast travel to see if the food issue changed, but got cut short.

I was also going to mention I was able to regain control of a vessel settlement by killing everyone there.
