For all it's faults and shortcomings, after all these years I have come to the conclusion that Fallout 4 is the most fun singleplayer game ever made. Nothing is perfect but no one can say that there is a game that even comes close, except other titles made by Bethesda themselves. I would agree that Half-Life 2 was incredible and mind-blowing, but lacked replayability imo.

If I could change one thing about Fallout 4, it would have to be the setting. Although it does have variety, New Vegas didn't and felt more like Fallout because of it.

Tbh, the only reason it is fun is because of modder. Without mod, FO4 would fall short in nearly every aspect.

(don't really make "most fun" or "favorite game" judgements. There's a bunch of games I enjoyed, some of which I replay.)

I don't play with a lot of mods myself, but I always use Classic Fo1+2 Music replacers, which I highly recommend you try. The classic soundtrack is also free domain now, called the Vault Archives or something.
Other than that I usually play Survival and just RP as a real scavenger. Do this if you haven't and thank me later.

I agree. 3500+ hrs and not using any outside mods ether, Fallout 4 has provided me with the most single player game entertainment than any other single player game.

An rpg in the skyrim/fallout style is Dark Corners Of The Earth. Call of Cthulhu H.P. Lovecraft horror. Set in Innsmouth which is just up the road from Boston. It's old but I enjoy playing it a lot. You creep around a lot with only a few rounds in your gun which adds to the tension. A few timed events - easy in theory but under pressure it's easy to stuff them up.

From a games design perspective, it has a lot of tricks that add atmosphere e.g. in combat the combatants on your side shout out with comments like "take cover!". Really simple stuff but gives you a feeling that your allies have your back.

The GOG version seems to be nearly bug-free in my experience. There is a patch and an reshade on the web somewhere.

The publisher was Bethesda. No-one was interested in the sequels which was a real shame. But that's Sales&Marketing for you - it's the same everywhere.

I have close to 4,000 hours in this game with I can confidently say about 95% of the time was for modding and settlement building. I probably could spend another couple of thousand hours more since I wasn't done with the settlements but something broke at some point on my setup and starting over is something I've been putting off forever. I guess it was time to let go but yes, no game has matched what I've invested in here.

Hot take but in my personal opinion fallout 4 is a superior single player game compared to New Vegas Because of how smooth the gameplay and mechanics are in fallout 4 not only that but the graphics don’t look awful. New Vegas does do a better job when it comes to giving the player many options to choose from as the choices have more impact compared to fallout 4 so new Vegas gets 1 point for that but outside of the story/giving the player more options to explore the wasteland fallout 4 is a better single player game.

The Heather Casadin companion mod.
Horizon survival overhaul mod.
True Storms, Darker Nights, and set the ghouls to 100% during rad storms.
