-F4SE is your primary must have mod.

-If you want to use any ENBs you'll also need to get your .dll from the correct website
==>(I believe its ENBDEV, the same place you get your ENB .dll's for Skyrim, GTA, RE, Deus Ex, etc).

Highly Recommended:

Community resource mods like AWKCR, which is used by hundreds of modders as a base. Most armor/weapon/equipment mods require you to have AWKCR. Its not -technically- required for modding, but I'd highly advise you to get it.

--------------
After that everything else is personal choice. Even the graphics mods, but I can suggest some of those if you want.

What you want for your first playthrough is to have your game remain vanilla and lore friendly as possible, so the first recommendation is to only use mod that fix bug, increasing performances and visual.

You can look in collection list if you want to.

Hi! :) Here's seven I use all the time. Also, I've found if I like a particular mod, the author's catalog is worth checking out. :D

Gambit77's Armorsmith Extended: opens up a L O T of workbench options for nearly every piece of wearable gear, makes your armor (and the armored clothes you wear under it!) much stronger.

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/2228

SKKmods Nuclear Winter Mobility Mutations: chem bench craftable, run speed, jump height, no taking any fall damage. Mix and match, then craft the Boring Person Who Hates Fun Serum (Mutation Remover Serum) to take them off.

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/52049

DegenerateDak's Attachment Pack: very worthwhile, expands weapons a LOT. Almost any mod from DegenerateDak is great, from early- to end-game weapons through expanded crafting. I'm not gonna list other mods of theirs I use, go catalog shopping when you get bored. ^^

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/76924

DOOMBASED's DOOMBASED Weapons Merged (Weapon Pack): has a lot of DOOMBASED's individual-release guns, adds them to the world as loot, vendor, etc. Some are weak and some are strong, and at the very least you won't spend the game looking at the same 8 or 9 guns. :D

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/16387

MrTroubleMaker's Laser and Plasma Weapon Power Mods and Suppressors: makes them worth using. :D Adds a bunch of workbench components, really nice. :D

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/18826

turkbuster's M72 Gauss Rifle - Horizon: Roughly half the damage of the vanilla Gauss rifle, but much more functional as an assault weapon (and not an autocannon). With enough ammo it can replace your assault rifle. :D

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/64701

The6thMessenger's Objective Rifle (OICW): Great assault rifle. :D It has a ton of workbench components including some that add bleed damage (without needing the Legendary effect!) and is good as an assault rifle or a sniper rifle. =^_^=

jic you're unfamiliar with mods (this took me forever to figure out) when you're installing them with Vortex you'll sometimes get an error message about two mods containing some of the same files, and then it'll ask you what order you want to load them in. The LAST one--the most "after"--will take priority. So if I install ExampleMod and then ExampleModUpdate, I want the update to load after the base mod so the changes from the newer mod take priority. :)

And for some reason (I know nothing about programming) there's some sort of limit or performance thing or I don't know what, but if you have the options for a "loose files version" of a mod, use that because it doesn't count against the limit. Or however it works. :P

I haven't used any other mod managers but I assume it's the same.

I'm sure the OP waited the 2+ years for your opinion. "Armorsmith Extended", though? Just a hard NO on that. Better, newer, and far less bloated options now.

the question of absolutely essential “must have” mods is always an issue.

Armorsmith Extended & AWKCR is certainly not the best nowadays but still many mods and installations rely on it.

Agreed. Too many bug reports and crash logs over the years point to these 2 mods...
I won't play without enhanced color correction or search and destroy.

The wrong mod overwriting AE or AWKCR will easily cause a crash. They work fine as long you avoid or fix mod conflicts, and install compatibility patches....that's for any mod you install really
None

No mods are "must have" for a first play through. You should play once vanilla then figure out what you like or not and figure out mods from there.

Any and all mods that get recommend are completely subjective and may be completely useless or irrelevant to you and could possibly change the game in such a way as to make it into something you will end up not liking at all.

Eh. Load accelerator is nice to have.

Lol ok yeah, something like that I guess would actually be a good "must have". 😜

But as a general thing, It's better to play once basically vanilla before piling on a whole mess of random, game altering mods without knowing if you would even like or need them to start with.
A load accelerator in any way, shape or form. (where needed) whether it be High FPS Physics Fix or what have you. "Upgrade your rig" isn't always the answer, cause some decade old components will load up a cell change far quicker than lurking at the threshold of a door for over a minute. That's where I first modded my install of this title after five hours of malaise.
My Commodore 64 could load faster than that on a bad day.
As a addendum of sorts to my previous post.

I created a collection of 19 mods that I would consider to be "must haves" for a first playthrough.

They do not alter the basic gameplay in any way other than the overall feel and function of the game.

Play the game for a bit first. Get through the intro and into Sanctuary at least before adding any mods.

I could also recommend some of the same immersive mods as globefish23 listed further up as they don't really change anything as far as actual gameplay goes.
