The game wont identify my graphics card, and sets the quality to low.
Furthermore, despite tinkering with the ini, setting my screen resolution to 1080x1920, it keeps going to a completely different resolution for some reason.

And whats worse is, that no matter how many times i try and change it in the options before starting the game, it refuses to use the settings ive put in. it just forgets it.

So if i put the resolution to 1080x1920 and start the game, it still goes to a different resolution.

What the living ♥♥♥♥ were the developers thinking. How do i solve this?

are you using Mod Organizer 2?

What graphics card to you have? If NVIDIA, have you checked in the control panel if the game is defaulting to integrated graphics or your card?

Game written before card is developed fails to predict the future with 100% accuracy. Great going Columbus, you discovered PC Gaming, where possible hardware configs are virtually infinite.

All "failed to identify" means that the card does not exist in the games' pre-existing graphics quality presets data. Hardly surprising since the game is 6 years old and the average gaming PC lasts 3-4 years for the semi-serious gamer. Meaning, most gamers have machines much newer than the game at this point. If you share your specs, we can offer recommendations. But if you came here just to complain ignorantly, by all means, continue.

I'm really getting sick and tired of the entitled and whiny attitudes. You may be the last one I actually help.

I doubt that is the case, if you use the default generic graphics driver you get like 1 fps, literally.

Look at the year the game was made then look at the year your graphics card was made.
Setting graphics to low by default is safety measure when a card is not recognized.

Is definitely an ini file issue if it using a different start up .ini file.

Yeah I would definitely do a file search for *.ini and see which ini file is being used to start the game.

What is your card?

If you have a NVidia card of the 10xx series, Fallout won't recognize that because it was invented under GTX 780 as the highest. The resolution goes to low settings automatically and won't save any changes (Source: Bethesda Forums).

Im using an Nvidia RTX 2070. Ive found a workaround though so now at least i can use my full resolution. However im unsure if im playing on ultra graphics right now, as that still wont change.

Are you using the GeForce Experience program that comes with it? If you told that program to use a certain setting then it aint going to let the program change the settings.

Yeah, same goes to me. My RX 470 GPU had some of its capacitors fried or smth after continuous gaming, and now I switched over to RX 570 and got the same thing as OP posted.

But the truth is, you can still be able to set the game configuration settings up.

You sure that's in correct format, where height is 1080 and width is 1920? I once reversed the number, where the height is 1920 and the width is 1080, and the result is like I'm playing Fallout 4 game on a mobile phone, which is hilarious. Borderless windowed mode, since rn, my GPU is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ itself.

I run mine on RTX 2070 Geforce no problem, but I have noticed it sets the parameters low if and when I reinstall it off steam. I go into options graphics and manually set for ultra - no problems. The only time it runs down to 1 FPS is in two areas of the game, the main one in the vicinity of Greenetech and on the opposite bank of river behind the auditorium - and NOT all the time. 3840 x 2160 is my graphic setting. My best way out of it is stop dead, and just click backwards until you start and will back out of the glitch.

This thread is also over a year old. Maybe it'd be better to make your own thread, with some more detail about your specific problem?

People who want to be helped will provide details about their issue.
People who want to rant and rave because they cannot be bothered to read will do so.

The OP was given the answer and solution to look at their INI file.

i just bought my laptop like 3 weeks ago with a 3070 in it idk if its due to having the dedicated GPU and integrated but could it also be due to me having the game installed onto a second hard drive different form the hard drive that i have steam installed on to?

edit I didn't add this in but i only get a black screen when i open the game but i can hear audio while the black screen is up so I know the game is working but its just not showing the image for the game

If your laptop has a high-refresh screen, you need to limit the fps to something lower, like 60hz. Or use the High FPS Physics Fix mod. The game is not happy above 60hz, and really really not happy above 144.

Also, in the advanced graphics settings, turn of Weapon Debris (has nothing to do with the black screen, but once you get in game, it'll cause crashes with modern Nvidia cards.)

Card not being identified by the loader is just because it only has setting definitions for older cards. Just means that you need to do the graphics settings yourself, it can't auto-set them because it doesn't know what a 3070 is.
