Alternative to Sim settlements?
HI,

so I played past couple days with SS2 and must say I LOVE it. I love the concept, the Idea, all the work done and detailed. Even quests, voice acting...

Most captivating for me though is the Idea for City plan - select some working template without manual hassle that same time dont need spend hundreds hours in every game to it look decent way..

BUT mod bring some draws too:

- city plans are too big, detailed and expensive - what is the good hav big city that have tons of recreation and shop spots for maybe 30+ people while realistically settlements has (most of time) <20 people. As result I see settlers e.g. on merchant job instead work gradually from basics

- this size bring significant lag and performance issues in settlements

- I am not so excited by plots as single objects - it looks good with lot of details of course but it is too fixed and can not just easily adjust or move around.

- Crashes - oh my god, crashes... I managed to install Buffout 4 - it brought some performance improvements but with crash logs I see now I have all crashes realted to SS2. I understand engine limits (aka. "Triangle of death") - but first it happen even around isolated and simplier settlements, but at same time I want have settlement everywhere if possible...

Sooo.. In general I look on something much less expensive that would bring City plan function.

- I would like have template for every settlement in game

- I am not very demanding on complexity of settlement, but it should be still real one and not just few sleep bags and cooking station

- I would like it to use vanilla objects so it could lead to less issues and easier changes and management

- It should be more stable

I have looked around on Nexus and found only several specific settlements but not some pack for all.

On the side note - any know if use of SS1 can be more stable and performance friendly? I have open the topic on Buffout 4 page and it seems issues with SS2 are quite frequent while none with SS1.. not sure if it just means all active users just moved though.

Sim Settlements is unique. Kind of no alternative.

However...

You may try to limit yourself to building one, maybe two larger settlements in a given game, preferably up north, near map edge and as far away from Boston as possible.
Ini tweaks are your friends here.
As are limited, low-level city plans for any settlement other than your main. Or smallest, 1x1 industrial plots.
You may also try playing Sim Settlements 1 with Industrial Revolution. Three level upgradeable plots with full tech trees and easter eggs are IMO much better than in SS2, I hope kinggath will transfer this addon to new mod.
If you want to keep everything kind of low-key try playing SS1 with no addons aside from Conqueror. This requires... a special character though.

Try SS1 as SS2 is very new still.

Sim Settlements is a drug. Do not do it. Stay clean. Just kidding!

I prefer manual labour like you-know-who from Good Neighbour. There is just nothing like figuring out what and how to build up a settlement at any given location, to make it fit its given name, to switch styles and materials, and to avoid making each settlement look like suburbs. :steamhappy:

It is far too easy to slap on one mod after another, and to end up with a mess. I am now at 200-250 settlers and all hand-made settlements.

You know after some 900 hours and doing settlements myself (I am really terrible at those things and aesthetic, I just build resource, big wooden box aka house with beds, some turret defense and shops and thats it... only where I actually spent lot of time trying to do something better was trying build own Vault 88 (having some screenshots in gallery) so this Sim Settlement concept is very refreshing and super enjoyable for me.

I just had a brief look and kind of get what you are saying. In one room did you put down several bench presses and you have aligned them in a perfect line like with a ruler. I assume you rely much on geometric shapes when it comes to building stuff.

I am somewhat the same, but I also try to break it up for this reason and intentionally do not place everything on a line, but try to kill the "inner autistic nerd who cannot do anything without a ruler". I then like building upwards to get onto the highways like you have in Graygarden and Finch's Farm and set myself goals on what I want to build so I focus on my goals and less on perfect geometric shapes and symmetries.
