88 would be a poor choice. Unless you want to be a feral ghoul.
I took the question to mean any vault which exits in the game the SS is in.
But if I misunderstood, then it does not matter, because even if you pick Vault 81, you would have died over 100 years in the past. I rather just be dead or take my chances of becoming a ghoul than spend my years left locked up.
None of those who would get to pick a vault, would know not know they would never leave them.
You would be able to marry and bring up children, knowing that if you didn't get to see the outside world again, at least your kids would. Computer technology would enable the creation of worlds virtually identical to the real outside world, with wind, the smell of blossoming flowers, the sight of small scurrying animals. There would be a computer terminal for everyone--where we could play computer games. Our work--what little there was of it--would be in clean air conditioned offices. No back breaking manual labor.
I would pick any of the vaults that eventually opened up to become successful communities. Vault City in Fallout 2 seems as good a choice as any. Not Shady Sands, where I might be stuck shovelling brahman droppings.
The issue is, those who could pick a vault to live in, wouldn't know they would be stuck in it the rest of their lives. The players know however, so the choice becomes easier.
Having some love ones die a horrible death from cancer, If you know you will get it, the temptation to just want to end it all before you reach that point, becomes very strong. And some, end it before it does.
As Piper says it, stuck to living locked up in a vault, would drive me nuts. Some people do well in Prisons. Some would want to end it all if they know they would be locked up the rest of their lives.
And your children if you had any while locked up in a Vault, would never see the outside world ether. Even after more than 200 years, the world is still a radiated wasteland after a nuclear holocaust.
Even Vault 81 did not open it's doors until about 200 years later. And besides Rylee, I am not aware of any other residents from it leaving.
And Piper's comment shows just how stupid she really is. Would she go insane on a submarine that was going to be at sea for a couple of years? There's virtually no difference. You're living inside a pressurized steel cylinder, underwater, with a water pressure of a ton or so per square inch aching to crush your lights out. Other ways of earning a living can be compared to prison if you're far out enough. Digging coal 10 hours a day half a mile underground--is that like prison too?
Well, I never played the original Fallout. And only played 3 for a little bit. Did not like it. So my knowledge is limited to what Fallout 4 shows.
Most people would never make good sailors, let alone a submariner. And I agree, some jobs can feel like you are in prison. I for one would never be a coal miner.
And no Piper is not dumb, she is just being realistic about how she would feel about being locked up in a Vault.
I certainly would not want to be even in a Sub for 2 years. Decades? Hell just give me a gun. :P
