Settlers in Power Armor?
I've looked for an answer to this online, but all the answers were crap. Supposedly, while in workshop mode, one commands a settler to go to the suit, which he then enters. That does NOT work.

Is it impossible to accomplish this with settlers, possible only with companions, or is there something I'm missing?

Not sure how to force a specific setter into power armor, but just getting them in one is fairly simple.
Basically just prop power armour with power cores in them (best add a few spare sif possible) around your settlement. When it get's attacked by a raid the next time, some of your settlers will go into one or more of the power armours and fight the enemeis with them. They should then remain in the armors.

Maybe I have to lower the defenses of such settlements, then. I've parked two power suits by the sales stands, and have given the salesmen fusion cores—have done this a serious while ago—but nobody has put on a suit.

Take a couple steps away from the settler and the PA. Point at the settler and press E just like when you assign them to a job. Then point at the PA and press E again. The PA does not need a core. The programmers forgot to check for that. Also, companions and settlers wearing PA will never drain a core.

Doesn't work. The settler just keeps walking up against it like it's an obstacle she expects to be able to walk through. I've tried varying my distance while giving commands, but it affects nothing.

Not sure if the game has changed but when I last meddled with settlers when the game came out they would automatically use PA but only in combat, then they would just abandon the armour wherever they were standing.

I used to wonder why I'd return to a settlement and find one of my suits about 30 metres outside the settlement - then one day I was in a settlement as it was attacked, turned around to jump into my shiny red suit of X-01 only to find that it was running off on it's own towards the fight...

Settlers have very little respect for private property, bless their little hearts.

The settlers and their lievstock seem to have cabbage for brains.

Not just settlers. I've had random Minuteman patrols walk into the Slog and "appropriate" PA too.
OP There are a lot of similiar threads on this issue. If the commands aren't working, it might be a mod conflict.
You could also check threads on the April 2018 patch, since it also affects mods.

Not a mod conflict. I'm running this game 100% vanilla, original developer code ONLY. I don't even have the unofficial patch installed.

Unofficial Patch is smth i highly recommend though, it fixes a lot of bugs that can fck up your entire playthrough.

Defences level doesn't matter; I have over 100 def level with Liberty Prime Laser Turrets, and my settler jumped into Danse's PA suit when Rust Devils followed my VB into SH in no time flat.

I'd say don't give them any good equipment if you want them to use PA suits.

What you can do is get the mod GTFO PA Danse and try ordering them through WS mode to get into PA, maybe that'll work? I know with that mod it's the best option to get them out of the suits without pickpocketing or other tricks.

Kinda weird, usually ppl complain settlers steal PA, you quite the opposite want them to use those :steamhappy:

I'll just not worry about it, I guess. If they're not gonna use it, I'll just sell it. That's a lotta caps.

Thats interesting. I did a test since I posted that. I was wrong. In my case I cannot get a settler to even try to enter a PA. I can only assign a companion to use PA. If you did get a settler to try and enter PA then I don't understand how. I have very few mods. I do have the unofficial patch. But was the PA you tried in the PA station, facing outward? That would explain them not being able to enter. The pathing ability in this game is crap.

Also. You could set up the PAs that you want them to use. Then wait for them to be in a good position. Then console in an enemy. But you will have no control over which one gets the PA. :(

You could try to place power armor next to someone and use console to spawn an enemy and try to force them into it.

I'll just leave the PA units where they are. I've given all the vendors a fusion core, but the place is defended well enough so that when they do come under attack, they don't feel sufficiently threated to use the PA. Fine. They'll be backups in case I lose the suit I'm wearing; I always know where they are.

do not let the caravan guard get into your pa, it will be gone forever
Jurassic Fart 1 Nov 19, 2018 @ 9:56am
I never give caravan guards fusion cores, and I never leave the PA powered.
