Best way to break down junk, armor, weapons, ect.....
Whenever I get back from a mission or exploring, I take all my followers stuff, leaving me over encumbered when I go and one by one throwing everything I wanna break down on the ground. I switch to workshop mode and then break down each piece one by one...... THIS IS UNINTUITVIE! Am I missing somehting?

Um... anything stored in the workshop is scrapped on demand.

yeah just go to any crafting station in the settlement and hit the button to store all junk.

it'll get scrapped as needed.

occasionally I pull some things out and drop them on the ground to scrap them, large heavy things I pick up that weigh 3 lbs but I just need the oil which weighs much less.

but thats mainly to take to a different settlement.

it can stay unscrapped inside the workbench forever.

For items classified as "Junk", just store them in the WS. The game will automatically break them down into components as needed. Doing it manually as you're doing is a waste of time.

Armor and weapons are NEVER broken down automatically, for obvious reasons. You can either drop and scrap as you're doing OR you can scrap them at a corresponding Armor or Weapon workbench. Other options include storing them until later or selling them to a merchant. If you decide to store them, don't put them in the WS. Build a container and store them in that - settlers won't steal them that way.

Breaking down junk manually does have a purpose. If I want to haul items to Nuka-World I break them down first so that I may more easily modify/build in NW.

Or you could just assign a provisioner. I just build a robot at Greygarden and assign it to Nuka World Red Rocket.
