Kid in the Fridge / Kid in the Box
There was a mysterious murder case back in 1957 about a kid that was found in a box, dead. Billy is found in the fridge so I guess it might be a reference to that case. There is also a movie called The Boy In The Bubble, think it's about a boy spending too much time in his bubble/box so food for thought I guess. Since Kid in the Fridge is considered by the community as a Wild Wasteland type encounter in Fallout 4, I can see that being a reference to either the movie about the boy spending his time in the bubble/box (ugh) like Billy in the fridge or to the murder case of the dead boy cause Billy is a ghoul, like a corpse some may say (I think some characters throughout the various games say that ghouls are like corpses). Maybe it is a mix of the two but that's what I came up with. I don't know if anyone has said something similar or the same before but I came up with this theory on my own when I learned of the case + movie, haven't read anything similar while searching forums about Kid in the Fridge.

most of the 1963 nuclear propaganda was to make you easier to clean up afterwards. duck and cover. aint going to improve survival.
The problem with those old refrigerators was some kids would climb in them to hide and then died. Sometime the neighborhood kids playing hide and seek or they decided to hide on their parents. They didn't have magnetic vinyl seals on the doors. They had mechanical latches that only opened with the outside handle pulling back the latch. They also had an air tight rubber seal. The door locked shut when it closed. Kids died every year and it became illegal to make refrigerators like that, and people were told to remove doors or locking mechanisms when putting them to the curb for pick up. Chain them shut when being stored and empty. Most refrigerator dead kid news was about refrigerators that were set outside for pick up or setting in a garage not in use, so not filled with stuff. I used to get warned about never hide in a refrigerator when I was a young kid, and often hearing that some missing kid had suffocated before being found days to weeks later in the news.

That's another nice explanation.

Well avoid falling debris. But yeah, doesn't do squat against radiation or nuclear fire.

As I recall the idea of duck and cover was to prevent injuries from window glass shrapnel, as most classrooms in the 50s had big windows for ventilation. Of course if the explosion was close shrapnel would be the least of your problems...
boy in a bubble was a medical case, he had to live his life in a contained enviroment in case of catching the most simpelest of colds that could kill him, you could have just looked it up on the internet for a better answer

I just had a conversation and they told me about it, I did depend on what I heard so I guess your input makes it kinda false
The whole thing is ridiculous anyway. Even ghouls have to eat and drink and breathe air, so no way Billy could have survived for 200 years locked up in a fridge..

I'm pretty sure this is debatable

Yep. One person around here says that it is a simple example of hibernation. But hibernation is just a deep sleep requiring a large amount of stored fat to 'eat' while sleeping. Ghouls don't look to have any excess fat. Maybe Billy's body ate all the human fat that ghouls don't seem to need. He started out as someone who could barely fit in the fridge. Or it is impossible. Something like that.
