For melee build

Either power armor to avoid dying instantly, or sneak-modded armor to avoid dying instantly. If you go Railroad, you can get ballistic weave in clothes and it's basically mini-power armor.

If you're not using BLITZ and you're on a high difficulty level, expect to die a lot.

What are you wanting to know?

If you are going to use Pain Train then you'll want to use Power Armor. Otherwise you want the highest DR / ER you can find.

Or are you asking about what mods to put on armor specific to a melee build?

sentinel or duelist armor, or the dmg reduction while blocking armor.

Does that entail using blitz perk or just literally running up to them and power attacking? If it's the latter, you're gonna probably need power armor or several bathtubs full of jet to not die every three steps. If you take blitz you can basically play the game without armor.

If you want to run into to people then use Power Armor and get Pain Train. And if you go that route then go for a Commando build for crowd control since you'll be putting so many points in STR you'll want to go with Commando since it only requires 2 pts in AGI.

This walkthough should help with your build. I didn't do this exactly but I did do a PA/Commando build so my build was pretty similar.

Edit: Vid #2 is the build.
