Game Mostly for Kids?
Is this game mostly popular with kids / teenagers? The reviews are very mixed with the negative reviews being rather well written and more critical of role playing / intellectual aspects of the game. With the positive reviews generally appearing to be written by kids / young adults. I've played all the other modern Fallout games, 3 and New Vegas and am interested in the setting but I don't find the same things exciting anymore as I did when I was a teenager. So I'm wondering if this is a game I would enjoy or not as an adult. Or if this iteration appeals mostly too teenagers / young adults?

I find that they are surprisingly common, but that most of it is "below the surface" stuff that requires you to think and ask questions about it

That sounds more like you just have the propensity to try and find or create depth where it doesn't necessarily exist.

I like creating my own narrative in Fallout 4. I ignore the main quest and ignore the fact I'm supposed to be looking for my kid while I make up my own backstory. That doesn't make the game great at allowing for roleplaying, it's more a function of my own creativity than anything the game designers did intentionally. Fallout 4 doesn't get "intellectual" points if I'm having to create the intellectual experience myself.

By the same token, I'd be suspicious of a game whose intellectually stimulating bits are "below the surface" which sounds like a euphemism for "only there if the player creates them." Feel free to provide examples to the contrary I guess, but like I said, I think games that truly do have "below the surface" smarts aren't the rule, they're the exception.

Fallout 4 appealed more to a general audience, which yes, includes kids. Way less swearing. Most family friendly Fallout game besides shelter.

Just think of Fallout4 as Skyrim, and Fallout NV as Oblivion. Your average person not blinded by bias/nostalgia knows that the newer games are better than the older ones in every single way except story and rpg , which is also the main reason why these games existed: story and rpg.

No, Oblivion was better than skyrim in many ways. Skyrim was good too. Older Fallouts, I agree they are worse.

Yep and that's mainly due to full voice acting. It's easier to just type a bunch of text with multiple branches to create plot lines story but when you add voice actors for every scene there has to be a compromise.

Developers can also make on the fly edits with the story as they proof read it weeks/months later. With voice actors in the mix...they would have to fly them back "oh we forgot this line, please come back" assuming their schedules match for a half hour mic check and before you know it the production cost of the game goes up alongside delays.

Oblivion and Fallout 3 had a lot of voice acting, and had stories that weren't too shabby. If the amount of money Bethesda put towards main character voice acting was put towards story instead, they'd have had a lot better ratings with people who have played any of the other games in the franchise.

I like that Codsworth could say my name, I didn't like being forced to sound like the a generic male when my character said Codsworth's name.

This game contains drugs, use of strong language, implied sex and graphical gore among others. Rated M for a reason.

Bigger nerds of franchises tend to overly criticize them, thats all it is, especially older ones.

I'm 32 and I love the game.

Is it a great "Fallout" game? No.

Is it a great shooting game? No.

Is it a great RPG? No.

Is it a fantastic way to waste an afternoon or evening? Yes.

Am sure it has the M rating. There are quite a bit of swearing by raiders in this game, lol

You neglected drug, alcohol, slavery, cigarette/cigar use, grisly murders, corpses, gibs, decapitations, child abuse, "sex" innuendos, murder, arson, criminal enterprising, and the oh-so-popular prostitution, also. All these are vanilla, btw.
