Cait is the best if you don't have lockpicking skills.
Valentine is the best if you don't have terminal skills.
Preston has arguably the best perk.
Dogmeat is the best for stealth, and you can use him with Lone Wanderer, which is one of the best perks in the game.
All other companions depend 100% on your playstyle, although my personal favourite personality-wise is Cait.
Dogmeat, because of exactly this reason. 100 max carry weight, +25% damage, 30% damage resist and +25 max AP with dlc are too good to pass up imho.
i agree with most of this exept for the preston best perk part. MacCready's perk is better if you use vats alot. Deacon's is better if you play stealth and so on the "best perk" depends on you playstyle
Codsworth after a visit to the robot workbench
Long range Laser on one hand
Cryo Jets on the other
Thrusters for legs
amd that is always fun when it was a suicider running toward that you were aiming at
And Dogmeat because lonesome perk work with him and he can find stuff for you.
If you're not building a VATS character or a melee character, MacCready's doesn't help you (this is coming from someone still on his first playthrough, and uses The Last Minute. I have MacCready's perk because it helps with my build) at all, because you're never getting headshots, and might not use VATS depending on your preference. Deacon's is only helpful if you're running a stealth character.
There's no playstyle where Preston's isn't helpful, it's universal, probably followed by Piper because bonus XP is good.
Ada is also great as a tank because Ada has no stealth. Mobs will aggro ada first and you can sit and snipe them while they chase her instead of that "fire in that area" if you were sniping solo.
