They do, but it's very delicate.

I'm using one right now, but it needed DS4Windows to work, as well as going into Device Manager and manually disabling every other "game controller" device, since all the Dark Souls games for some reason freak out when multiple controllers are connected. There may be other troubleshooting steps I'm forgetting.

I'd recommend taking the time to do it though. They are very nice controllers to play with once you get it working.

Yes you can play souls with a ps4 controller. My source is that my friend plays with one and I use a ps3 controller. You do need drivers though for it to work. (I think not sure for ps4) I use Scp. I hope I helped :)

is a ps3 better for it?

Use scptoolkit or ds4windows and you're good to go, if you choose ds4windows don't forget ta activate the 'hide ds4' option.

It works well, but can be a hassle to set up. For example the latest Windows 10 update broke DS4Windows. Now you must always open the device manager and disable and reenable your controller.

Yeah, a friend of mine had that issue too, that kind of stuff is why I ended up switching to scptoolkit, which works better with w10.

i prefer ps3/4 controller with dark souls but i found there is slight lag input compared to xbox brand controllers
I use a ds4 with usb cable, no lag. Bluetooth however had crazy lag spikes.

Really depends on the dongle, had a somewhat decent bluetooth 2.1 and had some crazy lag spikes, that one broke and I got a cheap bluetooth 4.0 from ebay and it works like a charm.

Dual Shock 4 works out of the box in this game without any third-party software.

However, the button icons will be Xbox 360, despite the fact that the game ships with the original PS4 textures. If you want the PS4 button icons, you can install Souls "Unsqueezed", the latest pre-release version includes the necessary textures.

See the guide for more details on installation and usage, the release with textures is here:

Does it? Isn't the layout changed like in other games? I remember games like Arkham Knight, Witcher 3 and Mercenary Kings having native support, but most other games having changed control layout just like most generic third party controllers.

I'm pretty sure I installed 3rd party software because it didn't work out of the box. I think the buttons were switched.

No, everything worked as intended, right down to the Circle button being for Confirm and Cross being for Cancel and the trackpad click being used for Back/Select rather than the Share button.

This probably isn't the behavior you are used to on PC, but those are the controller mappings actually used by the PS4 version of the game.

Aside from the share button not being useable in this game, all of the buttons are remapable so if you don't like the Japanese Circle = Confirm, Cross = Cancel scheme you can fix that yourself.

I remember now the switched buttons were in DS2. Almost deleted my save game because X was square.
But I just tried in DS3 without DS4Windows and it doesn't even recognize the controller. Nothing.

btw I think the Circle for Confirm is only in the Japanese PS4 version.

Same here, just tried out of curiosity and without ds4windows or scptoolkit it doesn't work at all for me. And yes, in the non-japanese ps4 versions X is confirm and O is cancel.

Hmm, this is weird. I don't have any controller software installed on my laptop and that's what I used for testing Souls Unsqueezed when dumping and assigning the button textures. I don't have any DirectInput -> XInput wrappers active but the controller works.
