Moaning/Crying/Frightened White Bulbous NPC
Has anyone else come across a pair of moaning/crying white bulbous-looking NPCs standing over a dead third one behind a breakable wall? They didn't attack me, but I had no idea what the hell I was supposed to do with these, so I just killed them, and now I'm wondering if I shouldn't have.

Also, I saw a chip in the ceiling in an early area that I'd revisited, and once I got the wall jump, I went all the way to the top and broke it down, but what I found didn't make any sense to me. There's a tree-looking symbol thingy that I keep seeing in the game, but I can't interact with it all, so I have no idea what the point of that was, either.

I'm LOVING this game, btw. :)

Those were the friends of the fallen knight, mourning his death. The trees are used with the dream nail (so is the corpse of the fallen knight).

You did the right thing by attacking the white grubs. Others have said it's needed to complete the hunters journal and that is the only time you encounter those grubs. So if you didn't kill them, you may have missed the journal entry.

Then again, it's a sad story about the False Knight. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I understand, the False Knight murdered the owner of the giant armor while he was sleeping and took it for himself in order to protect himself his friends and become "stronger" to overcome anything.

Wall-climb up the passage on the right side of the False Knight boss room. You should see the breakable wall on the left side of that upward-leading passage.

Well, technically it was never confirmed that he murdered Hegemol, just that he stole the armor.

Lil thing just stole it as he saw the armor "laying around"

Regardless of whether the False Knight killed Hegemol, as the journal entry states, the maggots are treated... poorly by the rest of the world, and the False Knight's brothers never killed anyone. It's just tough luck for them. :-(

But yeah, you have to kill them if you ever want to complete the Hunter's Journal.

"I wanted it... the strength to protect the others...
When I saw that Knight... sleeping... safe in his big armoured shell...
It wasn't madness that drove me to it... I just wanted it...
But... in the end? If strength can not save you, then what can...?"
-post Failed Champion dialogue

I'd say that pretty well confirms he murdered the knight in his sleep. He saw the Knight, not an empty suit of armor. It wasn't madness that drove him (to murder) he just wanted that strength.
