Down attack
I've loving this game so far, and the only complaint I’m having is the poor reliability of down attacking.

Granted, I'm not the greatest at down attacking in any game. I struggle the most with trying to move left/right, then time the down arrow to and attack, the move to the left or right again.

What would help me, and likely others if there could be some way to bind a single button to down attack, rather than the combination of pushing down, and attacking. For example on the keyboard, just pushing down in midair assumes you want to do a down attack.

For me, this would improve reliability, and timing of the attack. Rather than flailing around attacking left or right rather than down on the water walkers.

You could always just get a controller.
Unfortunately, there a re other moves in midair using down. Maybe having a dedicated button (you can use a program to set up macros easily) would help.

I actually am using a controller since that is what the game recommended, which I think may be a part of my problem. I don't use them very often.

Ah, I guess I haven't unlocked those yet. Well that would make it more difficult to set that up with the limited number of buttons controllers have.

I found that playing with a d-pad is much easier than with a stick. With stick - my fingers are shaking and I can accidentally slash sideways when I wanted down.
So try that, unless you are rocking a 360 with garbage d-pad, then try a keyboard instead.
I guess I'm rocking a garbage d-pad, lol. I have an X-box controller meant for PC at any rate. Got it for a birthday a few years back. I actually don't own a consol other than PS2, GBA, laptop.
You don't have to push down and attack at same time.

You can hold down first as soon as you jump, and then press attack later whenever you want to perform the attack. That made it much easier and consistent for me when I realized that

The problem I have is trying to move left/right, then hold the down in time to attack/bounce back up. Too often I'm ended up "diagnal" which the game seems to not interperate as me wanting to attack down. I end up hiting the water walkers, then inveriably hit the water, taking two damage per attempt.

I ended up loosing 1300 Ore due to not being able to make it across the water in the green path a second time to retreaive my soul. (Which prompted to make this topic in a semi-rage quit.) I hope to eventually get things sorted out, and plan on practicing on the empty armor the first boss left behind and see if I can't nail out the mechanics.

I was just hopign that I could get it changed like in Rouge Legacy, which would help me out a lot with timing.

Have you tried using the stick instead of d-pad? That worked well for me, it should solve the diagonal issue too!

Regarding the loss of 1300 geo, if you are still in Greenpath :
Above the Greenpath stag station (and above Hornet fight area) there is 2 ennemies that give 80 geo. You can kill them, go back 2 rooms down at the station to save, and repeat. Great spot to farm like 1500+ geo in about 10 minutes
Do you perhaps have a disability or a lack of training with a d-pad? Noffense, but while it's a bit tough at first to chain moving forward and timed down-slashes, with my xbone controller it's ridiculously easy after some training. Try training on one of the water walkers, pushing a bit harder on the d-pad and just training your muscle(s) (memory).

Edit: My most natural motion for moving right+downslash for example is right next to the middle of my thumb's pushy area on the right part of the d-pad, then pulling my thumb back making the lower part of my thumb push on the down direction while the pressure on the right direction becomes too weak to keep it pressed down. I'm basically covering only the bottom right two directions of my d-pad with my thumb if you look at it from above.

This is odd. Holding down diagonal definitely DOES count as holding down for the purposes of the down slash. So yes, you can move left and right and still hold down and get the down attack. You sholdn't be having to push straight down.

I just checked to make certain this was true, and not my imagination.

I was able to get threw that area just fine when I tried it the next day. So I was probably tired or tilted making it a lot harder than it was. Thinking back, I remember trying to move left, then down + hit. But working with someones comment of holding it pushed down, and then rolling left and right, but still down made all of the difference.
