What Order to Play the Half Life games.
Hey everybody. I've been holding out to play the Half Life Series. I was just going to play the sequel but with this coming out I want to play it in order. Should I wait for this one so I can have played the first first or should I go ahead and play the sequel while I wait for this to finish? I would like the answer from someone who has played through both the original and sequel (doesn't have to be this remake) to answer.

[Updated Notes] I have beaten both Portal games and The Stanley P. CSGO is a HUGE joke like WoW but that doesn't matter anyway. I would rather play this remake over the original so my question is more " Should I go ahead and play through all the HL 2 games then come back to Black Mesa once it is finished or wait for it to finish so I have played the first first as intended?

{Apparently needed Update to the Update} I will NOT play the OG HL, not once did I ask if I should. I only want to know if I should play 2 etc first while I wait for Black Mesa or wait. Thanks.

But, as always within the Half-Life communities, we have to wait.

There is also Tripmime Studios working on Blue Shift and also Opposing Force remakes on the Source engine.
Nice. I would be jacked to play those with updated tech!

As far as the OP:

Wait for Xen and play Black Mesa first.
Then I would play Source Opposing Force and Source Blue Shift.
Then HL2, EP1 and finally EP2.

The HL sequels are absolutely worth playing. They add to the story in that they fill in the story from multiple viewpoints. They aren't essential to the overall HL story but they are fun and reasonably short. To a certain extent, how much you enjoy Black Mesa should determine how much you want to play the sequels.

Once you graduate from the HL1 story, you will find that HL2 goes in a pretty different direction. Even though the two games share characters and Freeman is the same protagonist, they are very different stories. In other words, the HL2 story does not continue from HL1. HL2's story it is just Freeman's experience after HL1.

In order to get the best experience you need to play them in order, IMO.

ok so , imo u sould go like this

-Non-official way
Black Mesa -> Half Life 2 -> Half life 2 Ep. 1 -> Half life 2 ep.2

-Or alternativly for game to have more logic:
Black Mesa (with wrokshop Xen) -> Half Life 2 -> Half life 2 Ep. 1 -> Half life 2 ep.2

-Official way
Half life -> Half Life 2 -> Half life 2 Ep. 1 -> Half life 2 ep.2

-Possible way (beter graphic for first game)
Half life Source -> Half Life 2 -> Half life 2 Ep. 1 -> Half life 2 ep.2

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you want to play Half lige extensions :

-Official way
Half life -> Half life Blue Shift -> Half life Opposing Firces -> =||=

-Possible way (Better graphics)
Half life Source -> Half life Blue Shift -> Half life Opposing Firces -> =||=

Half Life first, then it's expansions. Half Life 2, Half-Life Source or Black Mesa after that.

Half Life 3, Blue Shift, CSGO and finish with HL Source starting on the zen levels. You'll never have a good thing to say about the series if you play it in that order.

Clever girl.

My suggestion would be:

GoldSource
Half Life 1>Half Life Opposing Force>Half Life Blue Shift>Half Life Decay (optional)

Source
Half Life Source>Portal>Portal 2>Black Mesa (definately retail once Xen comes out. Shareware mod is also fine)>Half Life 2: Lost Coast>Half Life 2/Half Life 2 Update>Half Life 2: Episode 1>Half Life 2: Episode 2>Project Borealis and/or Project AC.

The Half Life 2 games can optionally also use MMod but only if you choose to. I'd also put The Stanley Parable in between Portal 2 and Black Mesa but I left it out of the list as it isn't actually a Half Life game. If you do decide to play it too, either the mod, retail remake or both are also valid choices.

Half-life/Black Mesa
Half-life 2

Half-life 2 Episode 2

HL1 > HL:BS > HL:OF > HL2 > HL2:Ep1 > HL2:Ep2 > Black Mesa > Xen

I mean, you don't watch Star Wars episodes in numerical order. If you do, I don't know what's wrong with you.

this is how you do it.

1. wait for black mesa to finish xen and play through it.

2.half life 2 update with mmod.

3.half life 2:ep 1 with mmod.

4.half life 2:ep 2 with mmod.

5. start crying because there will never be a half life 3.

Tell me exactly how the Two project games fit into the story. Also everyone keeps suggesting Blue Shift which I have always only heard horrible things about.

The two project games are fan Half Life 2 Episode 3 projects based on Episle 3 as Valve have tried our patience waiting for Half Life 2: Episode 3/Half Life 3 for too long.

Project Borealis is on Unreal and Project AC uses Source.

Blue Shift isn't actually that bad but it's quite short and doesn't add a whole lot of new stuff other than you playing as Barney.

Blue Shift is fun, but not super renowned.
Blue Shift is a story dlc
