[EXPLAINED] TEE-dus or TIDE-us?
One thing Final Fantasy X fans never seem to agree on is how to pronounce Tidus's name. It was never said in the game because you can name MC whatever you want and he is always reffered to as "him". However, in numerous games you can hear his name being said in Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts 2, Dissidia Series, and Final Fantasy XIV Reborn. Unfortunately, in those games his name gets pronounced differently depending on the game. You can hear it pronounced differently in both Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. What if I've told you both TEE-dus and TIDE-us are right?

In the Japanese version Tidus is ティーダ (Tida). TEE-dus comes close to the Japanese pronunciation. You can hear this in Kingdom Hearts 1, FF XIV Reborn, Dissidia series, and FFX/X2 HD REMASTER's Audio Drama "Will".

The most common pronunciation TIDE-us has some meaning behind it and I can understand why many people freak out when people pronounce it as "TEE-dus". It is because FFX has a heavy water theme. The pronunciation comes from the word "tide" or "water tide" to be more specific. Tidus plays an aquatic sport that takes place underwater. You can hear this in Kingdom Hearts 2. I am unsure if there are other games that use this pronunciation of his name.

At the end of the day they are both right. It all depends on personal preference. Whatever is said first sticks so nostalgia is involved.

How do you pronounce his name? Im curious about how split the fan base is on this topic. There isn't a right or wrong answer sense both pronunciations are correct as I explained above.

I acknowledge that it's Tee-dus but I'll say it Tide-us forever because KH2 pronounced it that way even though KH1 did the opposite, and that's JUST enough justification for me!

The spelling is Tidus, not Tedus, not Teedus. Thus, Tie-dus/Tide-us.

Honestly when I play RPG's like this I always pronounce the names the way that sounds best. Like No Waifu's example...Rick-ooo sounds dumb. So you go with Ree-ku. Tee-dus sounds dumb so I go with Tide-us.

Of couse this is just how I percieve it and I'm not trying to make any judgements on anyone else's gameplay. This is what makes RPG's so fun for me. It's all me and no one else can ruin my parade! hah!

It's Teedus. It's actually from a language where it means Sun, and Yuna means Moon.

Not sure the other characters are pronounced the way their Japanese counterparts are, why should this be the case with Tidus.

Names are international but are supposed to be pronounced the way the native speaker would say them. Tidus has an American accent so it should be pronounced the way a native English speaking person would.

Well.... for a few examples how names are spelt in Japanese. Keep note that in the Japanese language R and L are switched in pronunciation and B and V are also switched.

Auron = アーロン / Aron
Kimahri Ronso = キマリ・ロンゾ / Kimari-Ronzo
Rikku = リュック / Ryukku
Paine = パイン / Pain
Yuna = ユウナ / Yuuna
Lulu = ルールー / Ruuruu
Lenne = レン / Ren
Shuyin = シューイン / Shuuin
Brother = ア二キ / Aniki

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjgkfgCnDWc this is the reason why it's pronounced tee-dus. James Taylor said that square hired english voice actor in japan for this trailer. The voice actor pronounced it "Tee-dus" instead of "tide-us" and ofcourse, square thought that was the way it would be pronounced in english. And that's basically how it became "tee-dus" instead of "tide-us".

EDIT: Oh and i pronounce it "tee-dus" with a shorter "e" sound. Because that's the way it'd be pronounced if it was a finnish name.

For me, it's Tide-us, I refuse to pronounce it any other way.
Even though I know it's officially Tee-dus ..... :(
This is just one of the many reasons I hate the English language sometimes.....

"teed" "us", with the U said in "french mode" (NOT "you")

In Japanese it's Ti-daa, so TIDE-us makes no sense.

I'm still amazed at how they avoided saying his name in all the cutscenes

With dissidia undub you have the correct japanese pronounciation. It's the only valid one for me, others are just localisations

There is no "both are right" when, i quote...

"In the Japanese version Tidus is ティーダ (Tida). TEE-dus comes close to the Japanese pronunciation. You can hear this in Kingdom Hearts 1, FF XIV Reborn, Dissidia series, and FFX/X2 HD REMASTER's Audio Drama "Will"."

Original word, + almost every occurence being A, with one marginal exemple of B... Logic.
