@OP I find it tends to be better to just use Tidus since he'll have by far the most kills by the time you hit end-game grinding so he takes a hell of a lot more damage than Rikku
It's the natural logical conclusion of the algorithms involved.
It is definitely the most Linear FF, but its done in such a way that it never really feels boring.
*cough* Thirteen *cough*
Pretty much this, but I did say in the OP if you want to _minmax_, that is, to replace all sphere that isn't +4 (or +300 for HP, I forgot the exact amount for MP) and to fill the empty nodes with +4s stat spheres. It's for fighting Penance and Nemesis. Hence Rikku having the lowest HP (350ish?) is better than Tidus (520?) for minmaxing the grid. Your point still stand, though, it's fine.
I've beaten Der Richter on my old PS2 (without Yojimbo "cheat") and you already gain A LOT of AP with tomberry without having to do that
FF13 is definitely the most linear FF..... you literally go down straight hallways and get cutscenes at the end for the great majority of the game....
I don't acknowledge ff13 is a true FF though =)
