Penance preparing..
So finally beat yojimbo 5 times. I want to fight penance though now, and obliterate kills me on one move. I can use ultra null and do quick attacks on arms though..im guessing that i should put my defense on all the characters im using at 255 def? Also, i read on another post i should have auto haste/ auto protect / auto potion/ (im not going to try for ribbon..too much hard to get for one character)..so what should i put on last armor slot? I could put break hp limit on it...

The easiest way to beat Penance is with Auto-Haste/Auto-Protect/Auto-Potion/DEF+20%. This armor along with maximum stats, 9,999 HP, and x5 Cheer means no character will ever die if you do the fight correctly. Along with the armor you also need a bunch of (might as well be x99) X-Potions to heal up to full with Auto-Potion

The key is to not let the arms get a turn. Start with Auron in the party to guarantee you get the first turn (thanks to his Celestial Weapon's First Strike ability) then swap him for Rikku and use her overdrive to Mix Ultra NulAll, which puts up the x5 Cheer required to survive. You can use Tidus/Wakka for their overdrives to kill the arms asap, otherwise simply spam Quick Hit. Using a Three Stars at the start of the fight to make everything cost 0 MP is a very big convenience, but not strictly required.

As long as you never let Penance have a turn with both arms up, it won't use Judgement Day. With Protect, x5 Cheer, and +20% DEF (from the armor) Obliteration cannot kill you - it will always deal less than 9,999 damage and you heal back up to 9,999 immediately thanks to Auto-Potion. On his phase transition, dispel the buffs he puts up. Immolation is cast in phase 2 and will leave Full Break on whoever gets hit - this must be dispelled (white magic spell Dispel or a Purifying Salt use-item) before the next enemy turn. As long as you do that - and keep killing the arms asap - you can never die.

After that it's just a matter of patience, as Penance has a huge HP pool and takes a long time to kill.

The biggest limiting factor is having enough Luck to hit the arms. Because they have >111 Evasion, your base accuracy never goes above 25%. Penance and his arms also have 10 Luck, meaning your hit chance is further reduced by 10%, to 15% hit chance. In order to get that to 100%, you need at least 85 Luck on your characters, as each point of luck is +1% chance to hit (on top of base and minus enemy Luck).

Happy to answer more questions and/or clarify things.

I already got the armor. I cast ultra nul at beginning of turn. It is at phase 2 where it loses it's tail that the hard part for me is. The first part is no problem. The second part is where i get into trouble.

I have to waste turns casting dispel thanks to immolation. I wish there was a quick spell feature where i could cast spells fast too..like quick pockets and quick hit. I guess i could use doublecast...

Doublecast only works with Black Magic, sadly.

Did you dispel Penance's Haste? If you have 170 Agility on everyone and Auto-Haste you should have plenty of turns to dispel yourself.

I got 255 on most stats..i have to check if my agility is 170.

Updated: actually, it is above 170..there around 190 agility. I think though i try to upgrade my sphere grid again with luck..i think that is the determining factor here.

You don't need to manually cast dispel. Have Rikku mix Super Elixir to dispel everyone at once.

Good option for sure. You can also use Purifying Salts.

true..can you use quick pockets with purifying salts? Also, i started increasing my luck stat on the characters im using to fight it. What amount is a good luck stat to have on them? 50 or 100?

That's right, that's what I used. I remembered there was something faster than casting magic or using an overdrive, but couldn't remember what.

Quick Pockets is for regular items only, not for items used via the Use command. But Use is still a fairly quick action.

My usual approach to Luck is to get 114 so I can hit both Penance and Dark Yojimbo 100% but if you're already past DY you can just get 85 for Penance. More will increase critical hit chance, but it's not really worth it for that imo.

Just to let you know..i used purifying salts and it did not work for me. It still killed my character. Not sure why it did not work. I tried it both on the enemy itself and the character who is hit with bad status effects from immolation. Neither worked for me. Am i doing it wrong?

Also, i tried super elixer, but that does not work either. I used it on all my characters, and it does not remove the bad status effect of immolation. Both of those are not working for me. To prove it, feel free to watch my broadcast when im on. I tend to play in the middle of a day and evenings.

Yeah, I guess it is just dispel you have to use. Still, that's fast enough that you can still kill the arms in time.
