(edit): So select the system, don't plot a route.
It might have been a White Dwarf. They're a bit rougher than Neutrons... And don't boost you as much.
In order for it to work with plotting, you have to select "use cone jet boost" (or something along those lines) in the route settings on the galaxy map. Doing that will plot a route that will factor in the boost in range.
I usually approach it near the end of the jet and try to enter it an angle, going away from the star. It doesn't take long for the FSD to charge up, so just try to stay pointed away from the star and then full throttle out of the jet. Takes a bit of practice, but it's actually really simple once you get the hang of it.
White dwarf stars are pretty nasty and don't boost you as far though, so if you're plotting a route, you might want use the "star type" overlay and exclude white dwarf stars. That way your route won't include them.
