Sound in Space!
Why do they still make space games and still you can hear explosions. It’s a vacuum!
The only effects from an explosion in space would be the shock wave and debris hitting the you ship.
I'll wait tell xmas'15.

you can always turn off your speakers for maximum realism, but the fact they add sound to space games/movies is because its entertainment, your not gonna sit in a movie where half of the time there is no sound same ingame would be a bit dull

one reason and one reason only.

If they did it like it should be, the forums would be SWAMPED by people whining about it. so they take the easy route.

Because it wouldn't be as much fun. Realism has to balance gameplay/entertainment. Even Kerbal has engine sounds out in deep space!

Official explanation is that it is synth sound - therefore they don't sound like real explosions, more like muffed underwater ones. You can turn them off by the way.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.
yo i always thought it was the computers in the ship yo creating the sounds yo

I don't know why people are so lazy to search info they need

"Sounds in vacuum" you hear in Elite are projected to your ears by ship's AI

Your ship uses your surroundings to emulate the sounds that would be heard if there was a medium for the sound waves to travel through. This is apparent when your canopy is blown out, you will only hear the sound of silence as you breathe your final breaths.

If you even care, the explanation would be that to increase a pilots situational awareness the onboard computers will generate a virtual sound enviroment according to events detected in its vincinity.

Aside from that, any space combat game that is without sound would be very dull and boring.
The same goes for movies and tv-shows.

Also, ED isnt 100% realistic and doesnt aim to be either so just deal with it.
Why do they still make combat games where the sound of gunfire isnt deafening?
Hello there

I'd love a game like Elite that was Hard Science fact. I'd probably not get anywhere though as my physics and maths are dreadful.

Elite is a pure game with some simulation aspects, much like the original Mechwarrior.

Suspension of disbelief is vital as there is so much "wrong" with the Elite mechanics, but its an amazingly fun game to play and one feels that one is in a nimble spaceship from your fave movie.

Just think of it as an interactive movie with all the whizz bangs and plot holes most Blockbusters have.

If one wants to get uber realistic there are many more "disturbing" issues before the sound in space.

They could compensate by making the shock wave effect look amazing and as your ship meets it, it rattles the ship. You then hear your ship creek and the sound of debris hitting the hull.

The sound in ED is there, synthesized by the flight computer to give pilots (why do we even use fleshbags as pilots?) auditory cues. Well, it sounds reasonable to me.

Ships moving as if they are in atmosphere...

Realism in space sim games? Would you really play an Apollo 11 sim... that really did take days to complete? Where you had to score 90% on the pee simulator or the computer would short out.

Imagine the trench run from Star Wars... but realistically.

It'd look a lot more like

Wanna play that game? Google up Falcon 4

You mean 2001: A Space Odyssey when you say no sound in space makes it boring.

During early development they tried it with no sounds and decided it was no fun at all. As has been mentioned your ship is generating the sound for you, to increase pilots situational awareness. The change in sound is cool when you lose your canopy window :)

Bloody terrifying as well. Having 5 mins to get back to a station and some atmosphere.

The ships computer makes the sound. When your ship is damaged and your screen is smashed there is ZERO sound.
