Yeah you spend most of your time just looking at suns either nav beacon fighting or exploring. Once you've got anything upwards of a Viper you might aswell call it quits
(unless exploring 400 million procedural stars appeals to you)
I fly around with friends a lot and we hit up combat zones and don't leave until we've cleaned house. Sometimes we've gone on killing sprees jumping into fed space (we're empire of course, feds can suck it) and seen how long we can survive. Sometimes we hang out with a new player trying out mining and offer our protection services. Overall i'm still saving to buy my dream ship, the imperial cruiser - I know it's not best for combat like my viper, but it's such a pretty ship.
Just because you're tired of bounty hunting doesn't mean the game has to be over, it's what you make of it.
They are consistently putting out updates. Later on there will be expansions that bring in major changes such as atmospheric flight to land on planets and things like leaving your ship.
The initial release is all about you and your ship and what you choose to do. You can do pretty much whatever you want in the game. It is a sandbox game though which pretty much means you have to make your fun. And it is there to be had easily.
However, I can honestly say that if you are not a fan of space sims, then well, it's definitely not going to be your cup of tea.
Note: Steam does not show me as owning the game as well, I bought the game before Steam had it available.

I earn 100k each trade trip, and each trde trip takes me 5min.
I tried trading, I'd literally rather play Microsoft Solitare than run back and forth from each star port
But as a community - you can overthrow the local government of a system. There are three galactic factions you can align with or fight against. There are community goals you can join in on.
Also - show me a better simulator with full 6 degrees of freedom space combat with beautiful multi-monitor, VR, and great controller support. This is a beautiful game with a dedicated development team building upon this. But this is not an arcade action game, this is a simulator. And perhaps you aren't looking for a simulator experience.
I look at this as an increadibly massive beautiful platform on which to build upon and re-invigorate a long-neglected game genre.
Don't get me wrong, this is THE best space sim out (excluding EvE) but that doesn't give it grounds to be just straight boring.
I'm waiting for Star Citizen (shock horror don't attack me) but I was expecting so much more from Elite.. be your own Commander etc.. now I'm flying a ship where there is no need to upgrade and have tested all the weapons the game has to offer.
I'm not grinding 45 million for a ship with an extra hardpoint... to only have to spend another 1 mill each time to repair it.
