Stupid question: my starter ship has 2 cargo spaces, does that mean I can only mine 2 ores?
Like, with just 2 cargo spaces can I only carry 2 ores/minerals to sell?

Sounds like it. You can check your storage capacity in the right hand panel, check the ship tab. It depends on the size of the cargo rack you bought.

yeah the cargo is 0/2 so i can only buy 2 products. guess mining int he beginner ship is a bad idea for money :D

Yeah do some data courier work or basic ratting with the initial Sidewinder. Faster money than attempting anything to do with cargo until you have access to at least a Cobra III with an A rated FSD. While the Hauler does exist its better served as a budget scout ship because of what weight does to its jump range. First dedicated hauler worth using on cargo would be a Type-6. But the Cobra III is both cheaper and multi-purpose which makes it a good stepping stone.
I assume you mean the starter sidewinder, like most ships, even when you buy them, they have alot of sub-standard modules. In the case of cargo racks, it is usually a rack that is smaller than max size. A sidewinder has a spare size 2 slot, which is a 4T slot, you also have some free size 1 slots (2T), so you should be able to carry 8T of cargo np by organizing your module bays
yes, mining in a Sidewinder is pretty bad idea, except for you to get familiar with the mining mechanics the "hard way".

by default the Sidey should have a class 2 cargo rack meaning 4t of cargo.
this would be like a barebones mining Sidewinder, but honestly I would suggest you hold on to mining until you get a Cobra or an AspX.

On the other hand if you take the starting sidewinder out with 1a prospector, 1A refinery, 2 x class 1 mining lasers and as much cargo space as you have left over (2 or 4 t?) you can laser mine plat and sell it for around 250k per ton. You'll have to scoop the fragments manually. Ditch the supercruise assist and docking computer for as much room as possible, but I'd still fit a shield.

I did that on my Alt account had reached a million credits pretty quickly. Then I bought a Cobra and moved the mining gear into it, added a limpet controller and off I went.

Platinum is found in the metallic rings, doesn't matter about the reserve level.

Another good option for starting money is to buy a detailed surface scanner, then scan valuable planets with it and sell the data. Either google "road to riches" or just go to systems with agriculture economies - they tend to have earth type worlds. Water worlds, ammonia, and terraformable high metal content worlds will also serve.

Surface scanner does cost 250K, but it will pay for itself several times over scanning a single good planet and get you ships that do a better job of mining. And you'll need it anyway to find hot spots in rings.

A little offtopic but still... this is one of those many reasons why Odyssey isn't as good as it should have been; new players doesn't always end up in the newbie zone but instead around "... prospect" in the LHS xxx system (don't recall from mind). As a result, they're missing out on some very lucrative missions.

The best way for new players to make at least a million: as soon as you reached a certain level then all stations within the newbie zone provide you with the courier mission: "Explore the galaxy"; deliver a message to a station outside the newbie zone, this earns you 100k. Fun fact: the missions can be stacked, so... visit all the stations you can and pick up the same mission, if you do this right you can easily pick up 12 - 15 missions. And the best part is that chances are high that many will have the same station as its destination.

Then just visit all those stations... and wham... 1+ million credits.

How do you know if a system has those worlds though?

Everyone keeps talking about tons, but I could only bring 2 pieces of conductive fabric with me. Doubt that was 4tons of cargo :D

They're sometimes called units as well, but 2 is correct. Think of the fabric as several large rolls.

One unit = one tonne.

Stock sidey can only carry 2T, so you need to buy more/bigger cargo racks to carry more.

The sidewinder is a really good ship once fully upgraded. Don't sell it.

Personally getting a detailed surface scanner and just travelling around/exploring.. I guarantee if you do 20-30 jumps in any direction you will come across a few High Metal Content worlds, Water Worlds and maybe even an earth like. If you scan all those you can the sell the data for a lot of $. One HMC world is worth like 200K if it has atmosphere it's like 450k.. Water World will be like 750k-1M. I made my first 20M exploring for 5 hours or so then got an ASP and was able to really open up my game.

I once took a stock E-rated sidewinder to a Low Resource Extraction Site and made 2 million in bounties before leaving. (It was on someone else's livestream, and they sort of dared me.)

The only change I made was to ditch the fixed pulse weapons and change them to gimbals.

I used to mess around with a Sidewinder packing rails and dirty drive performance thrusters, some ganker would think I'm just some poor new player barely starting out and interdict me, then lose me in the first few seconds as I blast away at 745ms, only to swing back around behind them and start hitting them with rails.
