Very sad. Maybe you guys already know it, but anyway:

Shame, but understandable. People move on.

Main thing is the data isn't lost and is replicated elsewhere (eg: Inara)

I guess there will also be some behind the scenes discussions going on between the maintainers or those sites to ensure things are properly carried over.

The only real disappointment is they aren't letting anyone have the source code due to quality. I don't think anyone cares really.

You can still download their entire database, should you wish to do something with it.

Aww... For some reason I always liked EDDB a lot more than Inara, IMO the URL was also kind of clever.

But to be honest I hardly used them, I think it's more fun to try and figure things out on your own.

Nooooooooooooooo... :ksad:

I always preferred EDDB for help finding things. The layout's just so much simpler and easier to navigate than Inara.

Without any updates from players, that's going to be pretty useless for most of us sadly.

other than inara, is there any other options to get info similar to what EDDB offered?

He isn't releasing the source code b/c it isn't up to standards? What a cop out. News flash almost no code is up to standards. But that doesn't prevent someone from sharing it. Sharing is about learning and continuing where one left off. He should put down his ego and share the source. That is a really ridiculous reason not to share source code. I can think of many other reasons not to share like NDAs and so on but not sharing b/c you are afraid someone will see your messy code and think less of you is just ....well....there are no words for that nonsense.

All of us write crappy code. It happens. No one sets out and says I'm gonna write the worst code or web site I can. It just happens over time. This is why things get re-factored over the years. As more and more features are added here and there it begins to outgrow the original architecture and design. Eventually it has to be redesigned and rewritten. No shame in that. Then when you fix one thing it breaks ten other unrelated things.

Kinda sounds like I'm describing Elite Dangerous or any other game.

Tone .

In the end it is his decision and didn't have to state anything. Perhaps in the future someone will sweet talk him into something special.
Not releasing Source Code is PR speak for it had some spooky elements in it they don't want to make public. Just like Discord.

One thing I got only from eddb.io so far was the list of prohibited goods at a given station. Anyone know how to get that information from one of the other sites?

Use EDSM, unlike inara the station will show the prohibited goods. https://www.edsm.net

Not releasing it b/c you are afraid of the quality and others would look poorly on it is just a bad look. Period. There is nothing else to be said. It sounds like an excuse for something else. No one does that. No one even cares what your code looks like especially if you are not working for the same company and/or have yearly reviews based on it. Quite simply no one else would even care. I'm sorry but that statement sounds very insecure or something like 'imposter syndrome.' The only one who cares about what his code looks like is him. No one else. Whether he releases it or not is a moot point. I'm attacking his reasoning as a very bad look.

Not releasing Source Code is PR speak for it had some spooky elements in it they don't want to make public. Just like Discord.
I would agree with this statement as well. There is no other reason I can think of not to release it if it does not have any proprietary technology in it and/or it is not under an NDA. If he said he did not want to release it b/c it was his personal choice not to that is fine. But the reason he gave sounds like gas lighting to me. I'm not buying it at all.

The only real disappointment is they aren't letting anyone have the source code due to quality. I don't think anyone cares really.
Agreed. Absolutely no one would care about the quality.

That works, thanks!

Elite wont implement tools if we have third party tools that does it better.

That isn't the issue. The issue is these tools likely go against the original design intent of any in-game system that FD would offer. The idea is they don't want you to be omniscient with respect to the game world. These tools probably go much too far in that respect and while they are useful I can see why the designers of ED do not put such tools within the game.

Frontier made a web-based API to allow access to Cmdr data, AND they log a ton of stuff to your local storage so third party software can extract data in realtime.

They've gone out of their way to make this data available so websites like Inara and EDDB, and addon software tools like ED Discovery and Odyssey Material Helper, can exist.

I'd rather companies allowed others to use this data in creative ways, than have it all locked up inside the game with no way to use that data aside from some company-approved UI - which would inevitably be lacking compared to something built by an accomplished enthusiast.

Take ED Discovery. You can FSS a system and it will show you the discovery and mapping value for every planet. You can choose an engineering mod and it will show you which materials you're short, updating them as you collect them. You can even pretend-trade them in one tab to see if a visit to a material trader will get you what you need.

It has maybe 100 tabs you can add to the display, covering pretty much everything you might want. There is no way FDev would have the programmers sitting around to make a tool like that, not when they could be working on actual content for the game instead.
