I wasn't aware of this character, also because I'm not very invested in the whole Thargoid conflict because it's mostly about fighting while following a rather tedious mechanic, IMO anyway.
The stories though.. those are sometimes pretty cool. So I looked up Seo Jin-Ae[elite-dangerous.fandom.com] on the wiki and learned about her escape and grabbing a permit to HIP 22460 from another system (Synuefe GB-O something). That sounded kinda intruiging to me.
So I figured up the game to look more into this, only to discover that... everyone got a permit to that HIP22460 system now. Each to their own but IMO it would have been much more fun if we had to literally follow in the footsteps to obtain a permit of our own.
Now the whole thing kinda lost its appeal to me... there's nothing left to gain and/or discover anymore, so why bother hopping into Thargoid territory... There's probably a good reason for all this but IMO it would have been more fun if we had to dig into all this on our own.
We did originally, but as you said you ignored the original thargoid story, and you missed the events leading up to this one. Now we have the permit but you can't do much in the system.
There was also a POI with the smashed ship that Sao Jin Ae was taken from, along with voiced logs.
In fact, I highly recommend checking for galnet articles daily.
This one is on you. Galnet has been in the game since the beginning.
-and this is after powerplay next update; doing one thing at a time is often prudent.
Have you been to a thargoid cave system and reactivated one of the machines yet? Harvested meta alloys from a Barnacle site?
It's most definitely not all combat.

Farts. Ominous indeed.

I knew things were ramping up when they hit Shin... There was something eerie about their absence afterwards... That wasn't a proper attack. It was a test.
