Worth starting in 2024?

100%. The game could go for years yet, and there's no benefit to being ahead of any other players.

I have 6 accounts and 2 of them were started this year.

Better time than ever to be honest. You may want to avoid open play for a little bit while you learn the ropes... but that's up to you.

Do the tutorials. Read the manual.

And when you still get puzzled by something (because you will), just ask

For sure! I've stopped since vacation in January, came back last week and it's always enjoyable. The game mechanics are not easy at all. The learning curve is steep, but after you get the hang of it, gets pretty addictive lol I highly recommend you watch some youtube tutorials about flying, interface and ship building.

Should new players buy the expansions first or is it better to wait? I see Horizons seems to be kind of hated?

Definitely get Odyssey.

Horizons is included in the base game anyway.

If you look at Recent reviews for Ody instead of the overall reviews you'll get a better picture. When it launched there were tons of disappointed people and they did not hold back.

Horizions is part of the main game now.

Odyssey is the new DLC and it added on foot gameplay (with around 20 different settlements types to explore) and one ground vehicle (increasing the number from 1 to 2) and no new ships to the game.
Also the on foot part doesn't support headtracking and stereoscopic view in VR.
With the price for the base game very low i would take Odyssey just because it adds more gameplay loops to the game.

This game is dope and is now better than it was many years ago because of more stability and polished content.

Defnitly. I started again 2-3 months ago, had the game since launch 2014. Game feels alot better now then before, with varius activities to do. Defnitly recommend it and the expansions that now on sale. Gonna be a steal if you like these kind of space half/sim games

As a returning player, it can be fun for a while, think I played another 70 hours but the fun ends pretty quick. I've already moved on to other games. The first person shooter aspect of the Odyssey expansion is crap, if you have played any good shooters. But you need it to get any of the new ships when they come into the game next year, unless you pay for them for real money.

Buy the base game (since it is only $6 right now) and play it for a bit before buying Odyssey which has very poor reviews for a variety of reasons. See if you like it.
