what to do with private data beacon inside wreck?
I'm inside a wrecked ship looking at this private data beacon with flashing green lights. I'm right on top of the thing - can I interact or do something with this object?

It shows as a contact, but there's no indication of what to do next.

Is this on foot or in space? In space you should target it, keep it targetted for a while and then your scanners do the rest. On foot... well, check for other stuff around, an SRV might help with targetting.

Just target it and you'll automatically scan it, they give you data of several types.

I was inside my newbie ship at a salvage signal I found - basically, I worked my way inside the wreckage and found a sparking box with green lights. I was looking at the thing from one to 40m in the middle of my display. When pointing at a ship in space, I'm used to the scan automatically completing after a few moments, but that didn't happen here.

I tried using T for target and G for next target and neither worked.

Target and wait a minute or so.

I cannot target the object at all...

If it shows in your contacts comms panel then it can be targeted as with everything that shows in your comms panel, when you target it a scan automatically takes place and any data you obtain from it scrolls down in blue on your info tab on the top right.

I ended up leaving the wreck area before I saw your message.

When i open the comms panel and selected the data beacon, it got different brackets around it but there were no other indications in that panel. When I went back to the main hud display, nothing was displayed in any of the panels to the left of my radar. There was no blue text as you described, or any indication a scan had occurred.

As of now, I'm gonna guess that object was bugged.

Just drop down on a Encoded signal source and try it again, they're all over the place.
sometimes you get Data sometimes you just get a personal message from the unfortunate pilot who's ship it was saying "Thank god someone found this data, now it won't go to waste"
Sometimes there's data points you need to scan with your data scanner but just try a few in a busy system and you'll soon master it.

is there some log that shows if I get data and whether that data has any actual value?

is "data scanner" something I would have on my newbie ship or something I have to buy?

there is a scanne r on the maverik suit and probably on others too

Yes as you target anything in game in the bottom left window you see "scanning" and when scanning is finished any data scrolls down in blue top right, this data is used for engineering, just scanning ships at a busy system beacon can get you lots of data.
In your inventory under data you see all the data you've collected so far and each data type has its own limit on how much you can hold, the more valuable the less you can hold.

thanks for the information - I had wondered where that stuff originated.

In the case of the wrecked ship, I knew there was something inside the ship but couldn't see it. Is it possible to grab the data without actually seeing the object - like skimming the wifi?

Yes as long as you target the data core, the best place to get data is the Jamison crash site at HIP 12099 planet 1B where there's 4 data cores around the ship that you can scan from one place then log out to main menu and scan again until you're full, you can then go to an encoded material trader and trade down to get the data you don't have.
The best way to see if there's a data core within reach is by looking in your contacts panel on the left where you can select and target whatever is there.

thank you
