What's Some Suggestions for a Home System?
Starting off, I'm thinking about setting up somewhere that has access to large pads and facilities + equipment to purchase and outfit ships as I move up the food chain.

Li Yong-Rui stations with the discount for that are awesome! I've been to Ross 584's Wrangell Dock for that, and it works. It's also easy to remember, lol!

Maybe someplace with good areas for mining and combat as well? Suggestions?

Thanks Commanders!!

If you want a convenient LYR system that's not too busy, I used to find LHS 28 and the surrounding systems had pretty much everything within a jump or two. That was years ago though, no idea if it's still any good.

Or you could look at joining a squadron, and make one of their controlled systems your home (or even help them take control of a system to call home).

This isn't something anyone can answer because it's quite a personal issue. Some value cosmetics.. I know a commander who took pride in the fact that his home system had several earth-like planets because it made the whole thing look more realistic: it was a system he could see himself coming home to. Others value commodities; the more stations a system has the better.

There is no "right" or "wrong" here... heck... only a few days ago a commander mentioned how his home system suddenly got into a state of war and he didn't like that. Of course.. there are others who thrive on combat and conflicts so for them it's ideal.

For what's it worth though... personally I wouldn't focus on mineable systems. See, you pick a home system to have something to come back to, and the main reason for that is to get a better reputation with the factions there. Mining has no effect on this and is IMO better not accounted for. Also because good mining systems imply a risk of getting flooded with fleet carriers which could bring their own share of problems.

I'd focus on ease of use (so: how far away is the base you're going to call home), cosmetics (do you enjoy the environment, do you think you can 'live' there?) and of course the factions and the state of the system. If you enjoy trading then you might want to focus on the system type to get a good idea on what commodities they want and sell. This can also help with any delivery missions.

So yah, it also depends on what kind of player you are; what activities you like best.

Alas, maybe my story will help you get ideas and maybe not ;)

At first I concentrated on finding a station I could see myself living in, and if possible I'd also like a faction which name I liked. I ended up in the Ditibi system (Babbage City) and I liked the idea of living in a "city"; I also took a liking to the circular design of the station, it made it look more suited for accomodation / recreation. The main faction are the "Minutemen" and I took a liking to that too.

Because I started messing with powerplay back then my home system turned hostile on me (I favored Felicia Winters over Mason) and so I decided to move. I eventually ended up in the Kaura system, also under control by the Minutemen and the type of station didn't change, only its name (Polansky station).

Then Odyssey got announced and I decided that I wanted to live in a system which provided more planetary options; there was hardly a landable planet in Kaura, let alone one with an atmosphere. I had all my ships spread out between 2 systems (Ditibi & Kaura) and I wanted to spread them between a space and planetary station. At first I was planning on moving to the Elli system because it had a space station orbiting a red planet, and the planet itself had a nice planetary base. Well... after Odyssey the planet wasn't red anymore, also didn't look so nice, and I lost interest.

So.... I did something which would be my honest suggestion for you. However, this won't be easy.

I started looking for a suitable home system on my own. Took my ASP Explorer and skimmed the galaxy map to find a system that had a nice name and which system type was also something to my liking. My goal was to find a planetary station which orbitted a landfall planet that had a ground station on it (suitable for storing ships). If possible also one with an atmosphere but I knew that would probably be too much to ask for.

I spend hours visiting one system after the other, also making sure to map ("FSS scan") each and every one of them.

Well, I got lucky and up to this day I am very happy with the end result...

I ended up in the Tilian system which is a small system with the state of "Investment" which is quite positive. It's owned by the Tilian Crimson State Holdings which sounds like an investment firm to me. Being somewhat active on the stock exchange myself IRL this was a nice boon.

It consists of a planet ("Keita") which has a moon ("Bello") with an atmosphere! It has 2 (!) space stations orbiting the whole lot and both planets also have planetary stations. And well, my home station ("Maunders Hope") is 200Ls away from the star, vs. the 1000 - 1200Ls that I had to travel in previous systems.

So the reason why I think you should consider looking for a nice system yourself...

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2495125544

When I had decided on Maunders Hope I sold all my collected cartography data which not only bagged me 4 (!) million credits, it also sky rocketed my reputation from a nobody to being allied (this trick also works to gain reputation with engineers, maybe something to keep in mind?).

So I could start with a nice collection of well paying missions right from the getgo.

It's a lot of work, and you might spend hours just flying around. But it can be very much worth it. IMO it was both fun (I saw a lot of cool systems), profitable (be sure to bookmark earth-like worlds and DSS scan them later for more credits) and in the end I found a system which I could really call home because, well, I more or less found it myself.

Hope this can help to give you some ideas!
I second ShelLuser about mining spots, don't worry about that.
I first found my home system(s) then found several Pristine hotspots nearby, plus the well known platinum ones.

I don't care about LRY anymore as once you reach Elite on any you unlock Shinrarta Dezra system and Jameson Memorial station that has every single ship and outfitting in the game at 10% discount. So whenever I want to buy a new ship I just go there, buy and outfit everything, then head back.

My current home systems were based solely on: population, nearby trade activity, nearby pirate missions, so I ended up in Chona and Napia, been once allied with almost all factions, I've been making a lot of credits with pirate massacre, trading missions, with the occasional mining trip.

good luck!

I was going to suggest Shinrarta Dezhra, but I don't know how far along to (any) Elite status you are.

James Memorial has all available ships and modules available at 10% discount.
