Please help me understand FSS and CODEX!
I just cant figure this thing out.

1)
I enter a starsystem I´ve never visit before and use the D-scanner. I get the info there is over 30 planets. When i start the FSS discoveryinfo says 100% of the planets are discovered.

2)
In another starsystem i do the same. This is a smaller starsystem with only 12 planets. But only 1 of 12 planets are discovered in the FSS. (8%) So I can use the tuner and discover each one of them. This time I´m lucky and find a Gas Giant that updates my Codex and confirmes one discovery of that kind of planetary bodie.

Here is some questions:
Why was the discovery already at 100% in my first FSS in a starsystem I never visit before?
Why was not the other system already discovered by 100% also`? I cant believe I was the first one to encounter that starsystem no other player ever found before in this first sector only 9 jumps between 2 of the earlie engineers.
When I do a FSS scan for the first time in a starsystem, is it a random thing to sometimes succeed to scan every planet and sometimes only succeed in one?`

Question about Codex.
My main goal with this questions is to understand how to discover and confirm planets in my Codex. When the FSS show 100% discovered planets, non of the planets I zoom in to and "resolve" updates my codex. I have done this so many times now. Entering a starsystem for the first time, D-scanner finds over 30 or 40 planets and the FSS have already 100% discovered and when i zoom in to each and everyone of them no discovery and confirmation is done to the codex.
For example, i want to confirm the Earth-like planet. That is an easy example because there is only one reported. So no confuse is made to have not find the right type of that kind of planetary bodie.
There was almost one in every starsystem i visited today. But did not get a single update in my Codex.

Is it only possible to confirm planets in the codex when using FSS in a starsystem that I am the first one to find?
Can I get planets confirmed in my codex when entering a starsystem that is already discovered by other players and my FSS scan shows 100% discovered so I just need to zoom in on each and every planet icon that is already there?

Can I only confirm planets to my codex using the tuning in FSS?

I hope there is someone that can explain this in a good way.
Thank you in advance!!!

You're not alone; there's several layers here and nothing I read starts from the beginning (though ofc I've not actively sought out tutorials). There's like four scanner types in the game so get your wiki out :)

I´ve tried wiki, google, tutorials and this forum. I´ve read tons and nothing. The threads always takes other directions. But no one actually can explain how things really works.
I found a decent video on youtube that at last got me this far about how the tuning works.
The help and knowledge book in game is a joke!

Some systems are "commonly known" and thus... your computer already has all the data required. Nothing special. For example, if you're new you cannot enter the Sol system, but your ships computer will know all about it. So.. it's a game mechanic.

You weren't the first. If you were then you wouldn't see any bodies at all.

This is your ships computer at work: your scanner doesn't know about the bodies and thus they are labelled "unexplored". However, they have been discovered before which is why you still see them on your system map.

So... this is just my take on all this: the universal cartographers know all. Well, almost. They most certainly know all about the systems in the bubble but what they don't know is how things have evolved. Is "system x" still the same from the last report they got about it? Are we sure a supernova didn't happen or... has a star collapsed into a neutron star already?

That is why they will still pay you, even though the system itself has already been discovered.

And why your computer knows about the common stuff.

Nope. As I mentioned... 100% guarantee that when you enter Sol you'll know all about it. Well... your scanner will.

Happens only once. Codex is about types, not deviants amongst those types. So... once you discovered a star of class K then that's it. No other stars will trigger a Codex update.

... unless you enter a new region of the milky way that you don't know anything about. Then you're back to square one; but only for that specific region.

Earth likes are best scanned with a DSS (Detailed Surface Scanner) for maximum profits.

Don't forget stars... and black holes... and other phenomena. It's not just planets.

And also: nope. If you get close enough to a planet your scanner will detect it and that too counts for a discovery. Of course... FSS is easier and quicker.

Yups, but that already happened. As mentioned above; it only happens once.

(edit)

No offense but... tried tutorials and nothing? Then you didn't try hard or didn't search for any matching keywords because this stuff is all out there.

Thank you very much ShelLuser!
You are the most kind and wisest person in the universe taking all this time and explains this very well.
Yes, i´ve visit that link before too.
I´ve spent a lot of time in tutorials to learn the most of this game in all aspects.
But just about this I have a big hangup.
The main issue that started me questioning this is that it doesnt add up all of it.

There are some planets I just cant get confirmed to my codex.
I have no issues about scanning stars and other things by other scanners or scanning planets with the DSS.

If there is, in the first sector we start in, a planet with the info text "Earth-like", I thought a planet like that would be the right planet to scan (zoom in to in FSS) and that planet only exist in this sector by just that type. (until someone reports to the cartographers a new discovery of a new type). Because in the Codex there is just 1 reported as for now.
But when I zoom in on dozens of those earth-like planets with my FSS I´ve never got one confirmed. I know it happens only once. Thats why all the questions really. I thought i did something wrong with FSS or that the planet would be found in a particulary other way.

I´ve also found water, amoniak and other type of planets that still is not confirmed once, even if I have done the FSS and zoomed in on those planets. Im only intrested in the confirmation thing for the codex at this time. No credit rewards and such.

Many thanks again for taking your time explaining in a very good manor ShelLuser.

That means the System data is already installed in your Ship, mostly those systems with high population with multiple Stations datas are already installed on the Ship. Its like those system are like New York City in our google map each establishments are already pinned LOL

So.. first: not the most kind, there are a lot more cool people roaming this forum.

And I am also going to thank you for putting me in my place here and before anyone asks: I am not being sarcastic. So after reading this comment of yours I re-visited that page and carefully read vs. glimpsing over it. Yah... I stand corrected, it doesn't answer any of your questions and yet here I was assuming that it did.

Ey, when I'm wrong I'm wrong and that's it... my bad! Sorry about that.

Hmm.... Can you share planet types by any chance? Also: playing Odyssey or Horizons?

Odyssey is "messed up" and at this point in time ... let's just say that I wouldn't even be surprised anymore if you entered a system and the stars gravity would suddenly pull you in and destroy your ship. I am exaggerating big time here, but ... I'm also being honest.

AHA!

Yeah, your reasoning makes sense. But no, as illogical as this is going to sound (at least I think it does): Earth-type refers to the type of planet, and then we get back to what I mentioned earlier: once you discovered a planet type then... that's it.

Fair warning: there are tons more earth-likes within the bubble. Pro tip: Always check a system you're in to check for these planets. If you can't scan 'm right away (for example: you're on a battle mission in a fighter) then be sure to bookmark them so you can (re)visit 'm later. Scanning 6 - 8 earth like planets using your DSS (don't mistake this for FSS!) can easily land you a few millions.

Indeed. One time only.

Hope this can help.

And stay safe out there Commander! :-)

Great! many thnx again.
Im playing Odyssey.
During this time we wrote I´ve visited a bunch of starsystems. Have succeded to get many planets confirmed. But only when I have had to search using tuning in FSS. Still no luck and just zooming in to existing fully discovered systems. But that could just be odd circumstances and the rate I´ve got new confirmations in my codex there is not many planets left to confirm. ... But earth-like is one of them still..

The DSS on earth-like ones sounds tempting. :) Thank you for the advice!

Maybe we misunderstand eachother about the earth-like planet and the reasoning about types? You keep mention that I only can discover a type once. Yes, Im fully aware. But my issue is I´ve discover earth-like zero times. At least according to my codex. There is only one type of earth-like planets mentioning in the codex what I know of for my sector: Inner Orion Spur. OR is that wrong? Maybe thats why I cant get those kind of planets to get confirmed because there is one very special kind in the codex and the ones I keep finding is not the one in the codex and they are only good for earning credits by DSS. (not FSS)
I hope this issue just have something to do with this odyssey expansion. If its messed up as you say then I´ve totally understand and have done everything right.

Thank you for all your help Commander and stay safe too!

That sounds like a major bug to me and at this point in time.. apologies for the bias but I'm pointing my finger at Odyssey.

SO.. what I would suggest:
  • Make sure the game isn't running.
  • Open your file manager, go to "%localappdata%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous"
  • Copy the "Options" folder as backup.
  • FIre up the game but this time "Horizons".
  • Try again with an earth like planet (or one you already discovered?).
I cannot help wonder if this won't help click. Odyssey is really b0rked at this point, despite all the updates.

And yah, I didn't fully understand the issue. I do now!

Hope this can help.

Time is 4 in the morning here now, so will check this tomorrow. :)
AJ24 2021년 8월 6일 오전 4시 32분
Two points to add:

1. For DSS you need to buy and install a Detailed Surface Scanner (if you haven't already - only skim-read the above sorry!)
2. ShelLuser is indeed one of the finest posters on here, despite any modesty suggesting otherwise 😊
Coolrocker 2021년 8월 6일 오전 6시 45분
Ok. Done that now. Im running Horizon and Im in the Procyon system wich have 4 Earth-Like planets. Procyon B4, B5, B6 and B7. I´ve fired up my FSS and zoom in on every yellow icon and down to resolving the earth-like planets. None of them updates my Codex as "confirmed". I still have zero (0) confirmed earth-like planet in my codex for this sector; Inner Orion Spur.
Coolrocker 2021년 8월 6일 오전 6시 52분
I will now fire a ticket to the Elite Dangerous support about this. And also suggest they name a star after you ShelLuser. :)
Coolrocker 2021년 8월 6일 오전 8시 59분
And to tell the end of story, i finally got an earth-like planet confirmed in my codex by doing a DSS, Detailed Surface Scan instead.
