So if you use the same bindings, just confirm please. Otherwise please share yours :-)
But I do have some advice: always make sure to bind separate keys for supercruise and hyperspace jumps, don't rely on 'j' alone. Simple reasoning: if you need to jump to another system but the destination is blocked (behind a planet or something) then pressing 'j' will result in an error because of the selected (yet blocked) destination.
Solution: press the dedicated key for supercruise.
The point is: I was realizing I (again) could not fly with the default bindings but I had no idea what is wrong and what possibilities I have.
Pitch and roll and whatever don't tell me anything because I don't the differences.
If other people have the same problem as me and give an idea which things to change I can try them, see if it works better (it worked a lot better in the fight tutorial) and start playing around from there.
Instead of "bad controls, can't fly, die all the time, bad game" I have a starting point where I CAN fly. That is the point.
I'd say:
Pitch(turn ship up/down) = mouse U/D
Yaw(turn left/right) = mouse L/R
Thrust(strafe front/back) = W/S
Thrust(strafe left/right) = A/D
Thrust(strafe up/down) = C/V
Throttle(engine forward/zero) = R/F
Roll(counter/clockwise) = Q/E
.
I use the same guide when I started playing ED and made a few changes a long the way.
left shift + a - pip to system.
left shift + d - pip to weapon.
left shift + w - pip to engine.
left shift + s - pip reset.
Supercruise and hyperspace jump, normally when they both use the same key "j" and you need to travel to a system that is hidden behind a planet you get a message that it cannot be done because the target is hidden. You then have to unselect the target etc..
Using different key will allow you to keep your target selected and activate supercruise to move away and then use k to hyperspace jump.
j - activate supercruise.
k - activate hyperspace jump.
left ctrl - thrust up.
space bar - thrust down.
side mouse button - throttle speed, set to 25% increment.
When you travel toward your target at 100% throttle, at 7 sec drop the throttle to 75% and let it do his work, you'll never miss your target, no more loop of shame.
wheel mouse button - select subsytem on enemy ship. (if you want to destroy powerplant, drive, etc..)
Good fly cmdr o7
What helped for me was making the mouse control Yaw on the X-axis, Pitch on the Y-axis and setting two side buttons on my mouse to roll. And very importantly turning the mouse DPI setting WAAAAAY up - I just couldn't turn at low dpi settings.
Another thing you can do is set up the maneuvering thrusters on some form of WSAD key cluster or to a thumb hat stick to help you make tighter turns when turning Flight Assist off.
Also you can use both the mouse and keyboard keys to input pitch and yaw at the same time - using the keyboard keys for larger movements and the mouse for smaller staying on target movements. I set that up on a Logitech G13 using a cluster of 4 keys as well as the thumb joystick on the G13 for the maneuvering thrusters.

w and s = forward and reverse
q and e = roll
a and d = left and right
space bar = jump up
Lctrl = crouch down
mouse = pitch and yaw
tab = boost
pips are on macros
easy to learn because years of gaming has programmed that control scheme into my dna
yep for this reason I bound shift + J to supercruise
So here's where I got it to feeling fairly confident at the moment after a couple of days, but still not eager to jump into combat. These are all tweaks from the default keyboard controls:
Thrust Left/Right/Up/Down - A/D/W/S
Roll - Q & E
Yaw - Mouse X Axis
Throttle - Mouse Scroll Up & Down (have to set throttle to 10% increment instead of Continuous)
All Stop - Mouse Scroll button
FSD Control: J for general use, Shift + J to activate Supercruise directly
Toggle Galaxy Map/System Map - / and * on NumPad respectively
Cycle Weapon Groups forward/back: , and .
