- thrusters are better dirty, it improves your heat efficiency as well as thrust.
- you really want that huge cargo rack? Can get a bigger scoop there.
- 1 PD is enough if it's for guardian sites, 0 is enough otherwise
But I have played with the idea of a size 6 fuel scoop and a size 5 fuel tank that could almost double my range before having to refuel
And I don't think you're gonna find 64 pieces of worthwhile cargo out there :) I can't think of anything that I would wanna bring back to reduce my range and attract NPCs.
I have a phantom kinda like this - it's kind of a "prepper" build with all of those limpets, double SRVs in case of a screw-up, I wanted to be able to detour and help somebody out if necessary.

Powered by a 2A because there are disjoint groups of systems that never have to be used together so priorities handle it...gotta switch on the SRV manually though :D Was also doing some funny stuff with the power distro and decided that 14 second intervals between boosts are enough.
AFMS (2), heatsinks
SRV (probably 2 as well), biggest fuel scoop you can fit, det surface scanner,
No guns, except probably a mining laser?
D rated everything except FSD.
Downsize the power plant but A rate it for better heat.
that if you truly want it just for exploration with the max range you can get.
If you added a couple of dodecahedrons to the back of a conda it would look like a mini star destroyer ^_^
On the subject of an extra fuel tank, I'm now wondering if I should put one in my Anaconda - I'm planning to go to some pretty sparse places, like Errant Marches, Formidine Rift, and Kepler's Crest. Worth sacrificing a little jump range for big overall distance boost???
Wouldn't dare to go without shields either, I'm not always gentle when I put them down...
I think it's hard to justify an extra fuel tank. You get hundreds of LYs range on a standard tank with longest possible jumps, it's really unlikely that you couldn't find a scoopable star over that kind of distance.
On a conda with spare space, maybe you could try micromanaging the fuel - avoid scooping too much when you're moving through dense areas to keep the jumps longer, then fill up to the max if you're expecting a long stretch of no scooping. Could also have a plasma accelerator to sprinkle fuel around when you've got too much.
But it all sounds like more trouble than it's worth.
That was my initial thinking as well, yep
(fdev said this when it was introduced; it's a hidden stat that has bearing on the chance of being scanned on station approach)
And imo it is worth considering an extra fuel tank in some situation.
I wouldn't use it for week/month long treks, but for flying 1-2k ly back and forth ferrying goods i would indeed.
I always bring at least 32T cargo room bc i like to drive around planets picking up both cargo and escape pods (you can find them everywhere, also in uninhabited space).
-not to mention the off meta alloys in some places; feels a bit more exploratory tbh.
Just be sure to remember both afmu+repair limpet controller.
And don't forget yer limpets! =D
And yes, I did pick up some meta alloys on my way out to my current journey as it goes.
Yep, got my afmu+repair limpet controller and enough mats to synthesise plenty of ammo for both :)
