Who Played the Original Elite then?
And does the fact I did, and still own my copy and my old Commodore 64 award me some special status within the online community?

I just used to fly between the two main star systems trading (a bit like I'm doing so far in ED) and then one day I accidentally taped over my save point, and then I never played it again.

If anyone calls me "boomer" I will put a hit out on you (in the game)

Since it's free on Fdev's site, I played it for the first time a few years ago just to say I did. Don't intend to play it again, though.

And I got over 2K hours in ED in VR :D feel free to put a hit on me ingame though I like that! :D

Played on the BBC Model B. Next played Frontier: Elite 2 on my Amiga. Both blew my mind especially at the time.

Right, so this is a Zzap! 64 club then?

Elite was my favourite game as a spotty kid, and Elite 2: Frontier just blew my mind. I went from a Commodore 64, to an Amiga 500, to a 1200, through each of these games.

I feel I have missed out some real vintage galactic trading now by not fully immersing myself in the complexities offered by the original game now. On the other hand though I did take some of the concepts from the game in to the real world and developed a system of trading boxes of pirate games for this particular copy I now own. The deal ended badly after a couple of weeks when the other party's dad found out about it and demanded we exchange our respective commodities back. I have no idea how I ultimately ended up owning the copy in the end though.

I did "effectively" become Elite in an alternate timeline where I didn't accidentally tape over my save? In another timeline I was elected The Supreme Galactic Emperor. So yeah, I am proper bad ass at the helm of a space ship. Just not in this dimension.

I'm still sporadically playing it using Vice, the C64 emulator. And yah, I also played it as a kid, I used to have the new model C64 with a nice monitor that could switch between the Commodore and CGA graphics, which was awesome for my first PC :)

Fractint using CGA graphics.. ugh, yuck, blech ;)
