You do stuff... to do what?
Hi,
as someone that just installed the game and did some courier/transport missions, because combat in the tutorial was very confusing to me....

What is the point of what i'm doing in elite?

I made about 200 000 and i think that soon i will be able to buy a better ship and install the autodocking and "auto parking" on that ship+ add some tools to what i want to do in the future (what ever that will be... i think i will try mining and combat before i pick a new ship).

ANYWAY.... what is my goal?
I played EvE Online and there i at least had the goal of fighting over starsystems or to become rich (i did T2 production for Jita and in the and had plex for 3 years...)

In Elite i'm not even sure what i should do to have any effect on the gameworld.

If i do mining... i might not get killed and can sell stuff -> more money
Transport stuff to other places -> more money
Do PvE -> maybe RIP or -> more money

I have no clue on what the goal is. I mean... YES, it's a sandbox... and i think that you can explore alien tech, but as far as i know... that doesnt do anything?

My basic idea is to at least learn the basic controlls, so that i can then later play the game in VR. I did enjoy my first jumps and i really want to blow up a big rock in VR....but i have no clue what progress means in this game (besides making money)

If there is a storyline... then i've lost track of it right away.... what is the point of what i'm doing?
You can have carriers, but what would you even do with them? This is sooooo confusing that the game fails to at least give you a goal to work for.

I can fly from A to B and buy ships that.... i dont know anything about and/or why i should buy them, because i have no idea about anything that is going on....

I hope you can tell me what the point of this game is, because so far the DEVs did a terrible job on exlaining the "opportunities" of the game to me, because now that i've learned the basic controlls i still have no idea about the world and my role in it.

I enjoy the game... somehow, but right now NoMansSky with the base building seems to be the better option.... and that in itself is very confusing to me, beause i think that i miss the point of this game.

Should i just jump for 2-3 hours, pick a system and then try to "level it up"?
Do i even have an effect? Do i need a clan do "work on a system"?
Do i fight for systems? Are there systems that are "better than others"?
Should i join a squad and kill NPCs with them and maybe encounter players? (pirats vs police)

I mean i make money... what do i do with that money? I'm so confused....

Elite is a bit like real life in that there is no purpose, goal or meaning beyond what you attribute yourself. At the deepest levels you could probably argue that Elite is actually a detective game.

You play the game to have fun. Doesn't sound like you are having fun.

I just dont have a clue what i can do.

I know that i can pick missions to bring stuff from A to B and that there are fighting missions. I can also start mining mission, but since i didnt play the tutorial for that... i dont have a clue so far how i would search for special stuff.

And because i'm not sure what enemys i get in what area/mission i've only done the transport missions so far.

I know that they all give me money... but i'm not sure what to do.

In EvE you have your high, low and nullsec.
You grind highsec to get the money to go into lowsec/highsec, because there you get more money. You farm the money to finance your PvP, because you join PvP to have the option for good income.

This is the same with any sandbox, but so far i dont understand where what is and if there are pirat system or something like that. I would guess that "ounter systems" spawn higher lvl enemys and have rare ore that is worth more than the starter systems.... but i dont even know if there is a difference in the systems themself.

I think the stations have different rolls (farms, ore refinery, ship yard?) like in EvE and traders have to deliver stuff, but as someone who did produktion in EvE and paid people to mine ore.... i dont think that you can do this here.

I also dont think that i can build a base on a planet to transform stuff into something better and then resell it. I really enjoyed to pay people to bring me Ore and build the ships/weapons for the fleet..... but i'm not even sure how this game works.

Like i said... the game is TERRIBLE at explaining what you can do in this game and why you would want to play it (besides nice visuals and sound?!?)

In EvE you fight for Systems + have higher risk = higher reward.
In Albion Online you fight for zones as well....(higher zone = better resources for better gear)

WHAT DO YOU DO IN THIS GAME?

Based on what i saw on youtube now... maybe comunity goals?
The rest seems to be solo exploration (i dont know what i could find... so i'm not sold on that so far) or mining seem to be the biggest things that you can do.

I will do mining at some point in VR, but i just try to find out if i'm missing something or if the DEVs really just made a worse version of EvE Online, but with cockpit view and without the large battles.

The biggest thing is exploration that NoMansSky by now IN THEORY does better?
Mining is... just mining?

I mean even in Minecraft you have "story" to follow and kill the Ender Dragon (i think they added even more by now).

What is the point of the carriers of you dont fight for something? I JUST DONT UNDERSTAND IT

The goal, you must write it. It's a sandbox, there are lot of things to do, you must decide what kind of pilot you want to be, set goals and enjoy.

We can't tell you the answer, it's yours.

There are a lot of tutorials and lore/explanation pages in your cockpit computers, look in your codex. There's also an Elite wikia as there is for just about any game, in some games they're lacking, in Elite the wikia isn't absolute complete up-to-date on every single tiny niche of accurate information but it's still probably one of the best game wikias out there, it does have a lot of information.

Hi, welcome to ED.

Elite i think is about roleplaying...but not only that.
I enjoy to search the perfect ship with the perfect outfit for what i want to do.
But what all you do, is for the sake of doing it.
Said this is not useless what a player do.
(You should check the wiki from fandom) https://elite-dangerous.fandom.com/wiki/Elite_Dangerous_Wiki

If you move cargo from system to another the other players notice that demand will drop. Not only, you will gain respect with that station, or minor faction (players owned factions) if you do some missions for them.
If that faction gain the control of the system the economy can change, the security can raise or drop to anarchism. Of course based on affiliance of the minor faction.

If you do mining in a spot it will decrease is richness for the next player
how to mining: https://elite-dangerous.fandom.com/wiki/Miner

You can check inara (companion) to check where players get ganked and search that criminal player.

You can join the fuel rats to help who remain without fuels. (https://fuelrats.com/)

You can join a squadron in game (clan).

Fleet carriers can help independent pilot with supplies of all kind and move squadron's ships where a community goal is going on.

A community goals is a event proposed from players. And can affect the lore.

The lore is in "real time" you should check the galnet news or read the wiki.

You can find aliens or strange structures that no one have discover yet, we don't know what the developers have added and where.

i suggest to you this third party tools
Inara companion: https://inara.cz/
EDDB: https://eddb.io/
EDSY: https://edsy.org/

There are "engineers" that is a long way to upgrade your ship, and theirs upgrades are really strong.
Inara and the wiki explains very well how to do...

as last the background simulation: https://elite-dangerous.fandom.com/wiki/Background_Simulation

i hope this helps, i wrote with some hurry

Although I agree with Lobo above me there are some goals you could work towards.. Unlocking the Sol system to have a look at home or unlocking other well known systems (well known IRL) such as Sirius.

A goal could be to earn more credits and get a better ship... but that kind of fun might not last well, depending on the kind of player you are.

So taking a step back: a good goal is to decide on a "home" system; an area where you keep your stuff around (mostly stored ships) and which you visit more often. If you keep doing missions for a specific faction you'll gain a better reputation and that means better missions.

Another goal could be to start doing some exploration... Trying to find your first black hole maybe? Or expanding your ship through engineering, that could also be a goal to work against.

But the part about having fun cannot be stressed out enough... that's the real goal and how you're going to gain that... depends on you.

Right now I'm in the process of building up my Beluga & Anaconda (sorta); earning enough credits to configure them exactly to my liking (I have set up my Anaconda quite nicely, but now I want better modules).

But I'm also doing some exploration... I started noticing the nebula and other things you can see in the area around you ("background") so the other day I decided I'd try and take a trip over there. First I made a few manual jumps (so: using the contact list) so that I could establish the direction I had to follow by checking my "past jumps" in the galaxy map. Then I simply set a destination a lot closer to the general area and just started jumping. 20 or 30 jumps later (40ly jumps) I wasn't there yet but the nebula sure got visibly bigger! So I landed somewhere on a planet and checked it out.

It's all up to you....

Try and see if you can do it. That's part of the fun - to discover your own abilities and limitations. The game gives you the world - see how you can use it to your advantage.

Yes the game is terrible at explaining itself, when I started I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. There is a lot going on in the game that you will come across in time.

Everyones goals are different, my goal is to own a vast array of ships that serve different purposes with a carrier to keep them in. When I play a game I tend to want to acquire all there is to get and do and see as much as possible.

The carrier allows you to move your entire fleet around where you want them and store commodities for trade. Upgrading ships to be the most effective requires a lot of engineering and making that happen takes alot of time and research.

Check out some of the 'how to get started videos' for a quick information injection and good luck out there.

Elite is not eve. And quite honestly, from your initial post , Elite does not appear to be the type of game for you .

Elite tends to attract "the simulator crowd", people that value the flying experience and operating a ship, often with advanced control devices such as hotas and joysticks, more than anything else, a dimension that eve is lacking. That dimension is reinforced with the fact that unlike eve, where the dev created their version of the universe, Elite tries to extrapolate the galaxy based on the current knowledge we have. This allows for example for a player to have an encounter with the voyager probe, assuming it survives until 3005, more or less where it supposedly can be found. This may or not be relevant for you , but it follows the same beat that will drive a player in microsoft flight simulator to fly to the azores islands just to land on one of the hardest airports/landing places in europe.

Being that the main focus of the game, if that is not something you value, i strongly advise to jog on to something else , as currently the flying aspect is the meat and bones of the game. So ultimately the answer to your question, "what do you do" is ... you pilot a ship.

As for your questions.
1-There aen't specific threat sectors like you have in eve. There are systems, and those have their own government type , what generally sets the actual threat level. Some systems are anarchic , what means they normally have large amounts of scum and villany -but it also does not mean every single contact there is a criminal. Other system have strong law enforcement .

2-"high level" enemies can appear anywhere and it is up to you to identify them as such and extrapolate your chances based on the ships they have and the one you are using, and then decide what to do , if you fight or run. This means an elite ranked pilot may be flying a starting ship., what results in a weak ship pulling some decent moves but ultimately being blasted by a considerable more powerful ship as long as the pilot flying it is not an idiot.

That said if you are looking for rugged opponents, you can find them in combat zones .Every single npc present there will be using military graded armor and reinforced shielding, and are generally harder to take down . Even harder enemies can be found in high paying assassination missions, generally visible as threat 4, 5 and 6 "signals", where you will find opponents with highly engineered ships and weapons

3- it is very complex and would involve lots of time to try to explain the scope of the game. I would advise you to check this video as i agree and sign bellow most of what is said and explained in it,

Hello fellow capsuleer and welcome to being a commander!

So the advisable goals and achivements in Elite... well, as you found, it isn't quite like Eve where the goals are more obvious. From the beginning, but some things from Eve do exist in Elite, just not well explained.

For example, if you were a faction warefare kind of person, there is power play in open. This basically works more or less the same, where you are able to pick up also power play exclusive missions to perform, which can involve moving cargo or doing a smack down on a target while other players also are looking out for you.

Say you were more into mission running. Well, most types that existed in Eve do exist in Elite, but don't quite have the narrative strong point that Eve did. Instead of "Gurista gang killed an ambassador of Gallente and are trying to frame us to look bad. Go find them and prove our innocence." it more or less becomes "Bad guy do bad, kill them please." or "We are doing XXXX right now (booming sales, retreating, under a civil war), go here and sell/recover/buy this from this station who is XXXX (under a pandemic, civil unrest, being sad)". It will net you money (a good chunk), but won't have the same story richness you may find back in New Eden. Heck, the only one interesting thing is that NPCs are ALSO running missions of their own, so stations actually look and are busy.

What about actual goals that are to impact the system? Those would be your community goals... which are usually completed pretty quickly due to how starved the community was, so they tend to get done pretty quickly. That being said, they usually can be "Aliens attacked here, go be a hero and escort people out (passenger), bring us materials (trading/mining), clear the area for recovery efforts (combat)" or "We would love to build a new station, here is what we need. If you help us, we'll give you some sweet goodies based on how well you did." The last one was a decision on who to support based on an in-game event, with either supporting someone suspected to be involved with a terrorist attack or go against them.

That's all nice, but what about more direct PvP? You don't get scrams for your midslots, but instead use inderdictors. If scrams stop you from warping, inderdictors pull people from warp out of warp. While in PvE, players usually have the upper hand, be it in defense or offense, PvP almost overwelmingly gives power to the attacker. From here, you now have 30-40 seconds before the victom can attempt another warp into supercruise. You can make demands (drop x tons of cargo), rough them up, be a douchebag and gank them (unless you are hunting wanted people, then you are just doing your duties as a noble commander), or be a crazy pirate who refuels them and laughs manically. Your choice.

Oh, about fuel: all ships use them as you've found out. Unlike Eve ships which is powered off of space farts for all I care, Elite ships need fuel and you can run out. If you run out, you can't do ♥♥♥♥ except nuke yourself. A group of people have come together to establish the Fuel Rats. If pirates want your booty and cargo, Fuel Rats hunger for empty fuel tanks. They accept requests for aid when you are stranded and will come out to refuel your ship, along with explain ways to help avoid getting into the same mess again. Even if you never become a Fuel Rat yourself, it is important to know they are there. Remember: They have fuel. You don't. Any questions?

So Null Space and the wars within them? Okay, you got me: Elite doesn't have this at all. If you haven't noticed, NPCs basically rule everything in Elite. They make the ships, your weapons, the stations, handle trade and commerce, and are more or less the only thing you can interact with to do any form of a transaction. This is one of the major differences between New Eden and our Milkyway galaxy: Eve lets players more or less run the show, while Elite doesn't. This means you can't have an alliance take over a system and rule over its resources or fight for them. NPCs can. Even group management within Elite isn't exactly scalable to what you deal with in Eve. In fact, even if you wanted to form a wing and go mining together or have a buddy take the extra seat in your ship, NPCs decide how much they should get. "There is no give money button." - MandaloreGaming

Not to mention, there is one other thing: Elite can allow players to play in Solo or Private sessions. This means if you are used to the open nature of Eve, you won't see a good chunk of the player base because they're off making money in Solo or with a group. The developers have talked about making Power Play require Open to perform any of its actions, and some players pretty much only play in Open. This might not sound too bad, but consider this: Doing any form of actions in Eve usually are down to the decisions behind them and the ability to execute the plan based on the situation. Elite, on the other hand, requires the commander to perform all actions themselves by assuming direct control of the vessel. Mining in Eve is target rock, press F1 and/or F, then make a sandwich while smacking V every now and then. Elite requires you to actually find said rock (as not all rocks state what they have), prospect it, get into range, fire off the lasers, and either manually collect the chipped off ores or have limpets perform this action for you. While this is happening, you can check your contacts for any new ships that may have popped in close by and keep an eye on the power capacitor for weapons and make sure you don't overheat. There is a lot more going on to perform more or less the same task, Depending on the ore, the value of the work is usually far higher than it is when in Eve, but finding an NPC who pays the top space bucks requires you to now carry the loot pinata between systems and past hungry pirates. If you are inderdicted by an NPC, it isn't a big deal. If it's a player and they aren't in the mood to negotiate, all the hours you spent doing the work is now gone. In Eve, I just buy another ship from Jita and go off my merry way to do the same thing again. Big deal. I lost time, not effort.

The only thing I cannot really explain too much on is exploration. Unlike Eve, where pretty much every system has been poked at at least once (Worm Hole space not withstanding), Elite has only had a small percentage of its system explored. In a sense, this is perhaps the only to hold a claim to anything, as the act of discovering a system for the first time will put you down as the lucky winner, and you can even scan the planets down to better understand them for a secondary spot with your name on it. To some, this is a major part of the game to find systems that no one else had found. This can also make some space cheddar, but I can't really explain too much on that, since I haven't actually done it.

Hopefully this at least gives some insight to what you can do with Elite and how some activities compare and contrast from Eve. Fly safe!

It's just the kinda game that you set your own goal. My first goal was to make enough money so I won't have to care about insurance if something went wrong. Kept mining and sometimes bounty hunting until recently I have 170 mil credits. ATM I'm working towards building up my reputation as a space uber with low risk passengers missions so I can obtain the federation license to visit earth - home coming mission. It's all up to you.
