Money grind.
I got this game on the xbox to play with some friends, what would be the best way to grind money for a new player?

Painite surface mining is also good, a double overlapping hotspot (GCRV 1568 - AB1 Ring A) is not too far from the beginner zones, (88ish light years). All you really need is good cargo space, mining lasers, and collection/prospector limpet controllers. Painite can fetch you around 600k to about 1 mil.

Like others said data is good, small cargo missions or passanger runs work aswell. If you want the big bucks look into low temp diamond mining. You could maybe aim for something like a keelback as a cheap do everything mining ship. Its only 3 mill, has hardpoints for all mining equipment and still has decent cargo space left over after limpet controllers. Theres way better medium mining ships, but they cost a lot more, for 3 mill the keelback could get you 50mill in one mining run :)
The best way would be to have fun. You didn't buy the game to grind, did you? Do what you like - the credits will come from every activity.

Go to EDDB, find a trade route of expensive mats. Grind your heart out. ( I;m not sure if EDDB info crosses over )

new here myself. But what I did was fought pirates in the sidewinder, just go to a high resource area [harzardous], in a high security system. Go there and wait for the cops to start slagging pirates, and fire at the pirates a few times to get credit, just dont pull aggro as all bounties are lost on death. Pretty fun way to spend an hour or two and make 2-3million.

After that I chose to mine with type 6, but with 2-3million you should have a choice of a couple of ships that will all do different things whichever you want to do.

I'm always surprised at people: they want a job that's fun and games with easy money grinding. Shouldn't it be the opposite?

Are skimmer's still viable? I remember my first week, I basically just did skimmers. This was before the Skimmer meta 100+M per hour stuff, but for a noob with nothing but a Sidewinder and a Scarab, there wasn't much better with less risk. Also, you learn a lot of the fundamentals of the game easier in an SRV than a ship (Power management especially) so it's a natural starting point.

But I haven't seen a Skimmer mission in months.

for a new player, it's best to get some lasers and jump into resource extraction site, wait until authority ships start attacking pirates and before they die, hit them few times. You get 5000 - 350000 credits per pirate.

that's what I did when I started, in like 2-3 hours I already had like 10 mil. Then buy the best cargo + mining ship and follow this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8B6PztDgSc0
It might not be best if you don't have good jump range, but you can always ask people in system chat to give you a ride on their carrier.

Best is if you can get someone to help you out a bit. I took my friend to diamond mining on carrier and he made like 30 mil in 1-2 hours on a crappy ship with only like 50t cargo space.

But if you don't know any players who are willing to help out, then bounty hunting in resource extraction sites is your best bet, because you don't actually have to fight pirates, you only "help" the authority ships and you get full amount. find a system that has station + extraction sites very close by. Such as Omicron Columbae (my favorite).

Also you can follow this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfqsZc9W47Y
this method is mainly for rank grind, but it gives you decent amount of credits and no cargo space is needed, but you get far more credits if you have cargo space.
grind enough for medium size cargo ship, then do that one until you are allied with all sub-factions, then you'll get missions that offer you 1 - 7 million each, you can stack them and easily get 10 - 30 mil per run.
