collector limpets immediately expire?
sometimes limpets do fine, other times they must be crashing themselves into my hull and die immediately. what's going on? (don't move while collector is entering cargo hold?)

Are you in the Python? I've had the same problem in that ship. I find that if you slow the Python down below a set speed you can deploy limpets and they won't hit the hull. If you deploy too fast they will just smash into the hull.

When you deploy while you have a collectible targeted, they will quick capture, collect and then die.
When you deploy without a collectible targeted, they will stick around and just pick up ♥♥♥♥ for whatever their duration is.
I think it says something to that effect either in the shop or mod info panel.

Sometimes they do crash into ♥♥♥♥, or get shot by other ppl/NPC.

fire the limpets without a target locked and they'll gather everything in sight

I think you're moving to fast. That's the 99% of my limpets death. The deploy and u instantly crash into them

As well as what the other guys said they’re pretty stupid. If something is between them and what they are picking up sometimes the just crash straight into it.

They don’t seem to have very good collision avoidance. They are stupid.

There is also an issue with pathing when they try to drop something into your cargo hold. They have a specific path for that, that extends a bit too long underneath your ship. If there is an object underneath, like an asteroid fragment for example, then they will crash into it while trying to deliver.

The "single use then it dies" limpet is the defualt behaviour because it was desirable, back when limpets were first implemented and most of the things you wanted to pick up were cargo canisters. The limpet died in order to make space in your hold. Unfortunately, with the proliferation of mats that do not take cargo space, limpets are more often than not required to last for more than one pickup run.

The best way to kill limpets is to go void opal mining lol.

I learned that the hard way; when limpet after limpet died going to pick up opals.
I finally figured it out - One Eye Jack is correct; they're about as smart as flies batting their heads on windows. They were going out, grabbing the opal, than kamikaze-ing right into an iceberg. LOL the cold zone was positively littered with dead and slightly squashed probes. I learned to reposition so the belly hatch was over the empty space between the shards, but it was a pretty funny facepalm to learn. :D
