I'm wondering if this person is relatively new to gaming in general. It's the only reason I can think of that you wouldn't call them that. It's been Start and Select, or Start and Back for a looong time.
So far the only time the "select" left triangle button doesn't work is when I am trying to open the connectivity window for hosting the game. Once I am in the game the select left triangle button works fine to open the map.
You're describing the exact reason I thought you might be a bit newer to video games, at least on consoles anyway. Anybody who played NES, SNES, Playstation, PS2, PS3, and others would easily recognize the start and selecft names. Heck, anyone who knows about the Konami Code would know what they were.
