PS:Waiting to complete a few games before I get my hands on Disgaea 5.
However I had the same feeling for some games too. Namely FF13:LR and Tales of Xillia 2 e.g. (even though I liked LR pretty much, but don't want to actual kill final boss without eliminating alot of enemies before trying for uberboss.... a bit contradicting since I don't want to eliminate those anymore since its such a hassle xD )
I recently picked up and finished the later one after a 1 year break.
I have the same problem with older games. Suikoden 2 or FF1-10 which do interest me at start (even though I did beat those earlier) but then fail to entertain me till the end. Not cuz I know the story but rather it's imo not as immersive as it was when I first played it. Probably got hooked up by graphics evolution at some point.
First sign of that is when you start skipping cutscene/ dialogue.
Second sign is when you refuse to do any exploration and follow everything a guide writes in every sentence.
Last sign is when people start blaming it for having PS2 graphics lol.
Pokemon (tried Silver, Ruby) is an example of a game that was very fun in the beginning but got boring after a while for me after i got too many Pokemons.
I was losing interest in Valkyria Chrinicles at one point near the finish, but i found the time to finish it, and it was again a blast to play, though it is very different game from others because of the structure of campaign and interesting tactical gameplay so i wouldn't count it as usual entry in JRPGs. It's much easier to dive into the game again after some time. Regarding Tales of Zestiria, i will probably finish it if there is not going to be any huge struggle fighting last bosses.
Another issue is I have loads of jrpg's I havent even touched because I keep replaying my favourites, done vesperia 10+ times, ff13 games done many times, star ocean 4 story done many times also. Likewise with ff7.
oblivion I have put 100s of hours into but never beat the game it was all spent doing sidequesting, farming etc. They made the game too big.
Also only did 90% on SO4. I absolutely love this game (not so much for story or characters but for gameplay kay?)
Easily played 500hours.
This is a game I would love to experience anew
Yep in both fallout and elder scrolls I spend so much time doing the side quest that I lose interest before I even get to beat the main story.
I finished Chrono Cross several times though, so it's not all JRPGs from that era. It's just Final Fantasy games that don't have any compelling reason to finish.
Hands down in my top JRPG list, it was amazing. Same as Super Mario RPG. Why can't Square-Enix make compelling titles like these anymore? xD
