Any one else here just can't finish JRPGs?
Just wondering.

Agarest series, Mugen souls, Tales of Zestiria, Valkyria chronicles Final Fantasy 13, etc.. Not even counting old games like the breath of fire series.

Seems like I really do like all of these games but I very, very rarely get to finish any of them, by mid~late game I tend to lose interest and forcing myself to play just to see the ending turns into a chore. Am I alone on this issue?

PS: The issue seems to get significantly worse at the point in which I realize I've seen every (or most of them) mechanic the game has to offer.

Hey, I don't know about others but I do love JRPGs and play most of them to completion(some entire series) but I do know what you mean for me some JRPGs are just not that engaging after certain point. From the ones you mentioned I completed the first Agarest War game didn't pursue the series, completed Valkyria chronicles, completed most FF games bar the mentioned FF XIII and XIII-2. Breathe of fire omg you must complete that lol loved it as a kid. Downloading Tales of Zestiria right now. My love for JRPGs were sparked by Shining Force a true gem from SNES. I completed Shining Force I and II on an emulator very recently as well :Lord_Fist:. Well hope you will find a game that can keep you engaged till the end.
PS:Waiting to complete a few games before I get my hands on Disgaea 5.

In my case it's more that I don't have that much time at hand cuz of kids and stuff. Therefore I need to properly plan out which games I want to play (ToZ is a no brainer for me and I rather take away time from sleep schedule ;) )

However I had the same feeling for some games too. Namely FF13:LR and Tales of Xillia 2 e.g. (even though I liked LR pretty much, but don't want to actual kill final boss without eliminating alot of enemies before trying for uberboss.... a bit contradicting since I don't want to eliminate those anymore since its such a hassle xD )

I recently picked up and finished the later one after a 1 year break.

I have the same problem with older games. Suikoden 2 or FF1-10 which do interest me at start (even though I did beat those earlier) but then fail to entertain me till the end. Not cuz I know the story but rather it's imo not as immersive as it was when I first played it. Probably got hooked up by graphics evolution at some point.

I had the same problem, just don't grind too much and finish it before the story becomes stale or a new game that you want to play is released. All the games you mention, most are done below 50hrs.
First sign of that is when you start skipping cutscene/ dialogue.
Second sign is when you refuse to do any exploration and follow everything a guide writes in every sentence.
Last sign is when people start blaming it for having PS2 graphics lol.

I don't play a lot of JRPGs, but i love the genre. If i get stuck somewhere in the game i will quickly loose interest to try again, especially if i am at the very end (like Parasite Eve final boss, i don't know what i was doing wrong, final boss seemed impossible to me (probably didn't have enough resources to finish it off)). Or if the story is not captivating enough to get me through grinding like in the first Grandia (I still plan to continue playing it after Zestiria).

Pokemon (tried Silver, Ruby) is an example of a game that was very fun in the beginning but got boring after a while for me after i got too many Pokemons.

I was losing interest in Valkyria Chrinicles at one point near the finish, but i found the time to finish it, and it was again a blast to play, though it is very different game from others because of the structure of campaign and interesting tactical gameplay so i wouldn't count it as usual entry in JRPGs. It's much easier to dive into the game again after some time. Regarding Tales of Zestiria, i will probably finish it if there is not going to be any huge struggle fighting last bosses.

It really depends. Agarest Zero is a JRPG that I couldn't finish. I don't know if it was the battle system or story that pushed me away, but it's just so much like FF Tactics that I got brushed off. That doesn't immediately mean it's bad, I played FF Tactics and Vandal Hearts in PS1 era and they were great, but I didn't touch anything like it since, because they were boring systems, although I did play them for the story. Agarest Zero's story just didn't have a significant pull with me and the battle system made the game way too easy. I like a bit of challenge, non-repetitive battles, and non-repetitive side-quests that have meaning. I'm more of a JRPG player, always have been. If it wasn't for Tales of, I'd have probably give up on it because of Capcom and Square's lackluster titles recently. Mind you, Tales of Zestiria isn't perfect in any sense, but it made me laugh many times, and I never got the feeling that I hated anything about it. Sure, things I wish they improved, but that's about it. Western RPGs have more of a habit of sucking for me. I can't play Skyrim, Borderlands or Fallout, just too much rehash, rinse and repeat going on. However, I loved the Bioshock series, Fable, or Diablo. Although Diablo is repetitive itself, I manage to play through it for the story then drop it. That doesn't mean that I think Skyrim is terrible by any means, I usually load them up and kill off a village or two and uninstall. It's the same as I appreciate Minecraft. I install it, build a house, then I don't touch it for a year. I know what it has, what it can do, but I understand the systems so much that I can see the repetitiveness and when I can see it in the code in the back of my head and it isn't masked the way they do with JRPGs and certain titles, I get bored quick.

I have this issue with both the Elder scrolls and Fallout series. Which is why I only but them when they are dirt cheap. Not that I don't get my monies worth at $60. I usually play 30-40 hours before I give in on those games.

I finish most I play but I dont always do everything possible, e.g. star ocean 4 on the ps3 I cant find myself motivated to do 100% battle trophies which I did on the xbox360 but that took 1000s of hours of grinding repeatedly for stuff.

Another issue is I have loads of jrpg's I havent even touched because I keep replaying my favourites, done vesperia 10+ times, ff13 games done many times, star ocean 4 story done many times also. Likewise with ff7.

yeah they the ones I gave up on.

oblivion I have put 100s of hours into but never beat the game it was all spent doing sidequesting, farming etc. They made the game too big.

Also only did 90% on SO4. I absolutely love this game (not so much for story or characters but for gameplay kay?)

Easily played 500hours.
This is a game I would love to experience anew

Yep in both fallout and elder scrolls I spend so much time doing the side quest that I lose interest before I even get to beat the main story.

prefer JRPG that a rpg depends on your tastes.

I've never finished Final Fantasy 7-9, basically the entire PS1 era of Final Fantasy games =P I get to about 1 hour from the finish line and just get bored out of my mind and move on to something else.

I finished Chrono Cross several times though, so it's not all JRPGs from that era. It's just Final Fantasy games that don't have any compelling reason to finish.

I get what you mean, but I do finish most now. Tales of Zillia 2 felt more forceful, because it was basically the same game as the first one. The reused environments were annoying.

Hands down in my top JRPG list, it was amazing. Same as Super Mario RPG. Why can't Square-Enix make compelling titles like these anymore? xD
