They never tell you. Hell, they don't even explain it after it happens. The best you get is Lailah seeing Sorey then noding or w/e with a worried expression when Alisha becomes Sorey's squire, then when she collapses she gives Sorey another worried look. That's the whole freaking "explication/hint" they ever give you.
Edit: To OP. Because aside from the really weak reason for her to leave, in most of the videos prior to release you could see her (Alisha) in fights that happen way after she's gone in the released game, even after she's gone you can still, for some reason, buy equipment for her, once she leaves you (if I remember right) you never see her again, Sorey and the whole party suddenly forgets about her. Also, as some people have said, Rose joining felt rushed as fk. Spoiler: From being an assassin that you don't even know to everyone in the party saying how she should join and how she's is like the best girl/companion for Sorey in like 2 talks with her. From not being able to see nor hear anyone to see them, hear them and transforming (forgot how that is called) like 10 mins after you met her.
Alisha's DLC wasn't going to be free either, it only passed to be free after the community called them on their bs.
It was handled really poorly.
There is an alien/creature/planet essence/whatever created on Fodra named Lambda that was treated poorly both when he was discovered/created (I don't remember which) and when he arrived on the game's main planet. He was treated as a monster on the game's main planet and it kind of made him nuts. When stuff goes wrong in the kid portion of the game and Sophie accidentally mortally wounds Richard (iirc) when they find Lambda in a cave or something, Lambda merges with Richard and Richard lives. Years later Lambda awakens, merged with Richard. The game happens, and in the end Asbel convinces Lambda to stand down and merge with him instead (hilariously spoiled by one of the PS3 backgrounds the game unlocks). That unlocks Richard as a playable character in the long post game story added in Graces f, and in that Asbel has Lambda inside him but he isn't being overwhelmed like Richard was.
That was a messy wall of text, but I believe that is roughly correct.
It was never said in any cut-scene but if you watch all of the skits that can be brought up through the button prompt at places like save points or the Inns. The group has a discussion about Alisha having to return to Ladylake instead of joining Sorey, Rose and the group on their adventure. Rose makes the statement that she can tell Alisha wanted to come with them instead of returning. Then asks Sorey if it was true that she was his Squire and inquires why she left his service. He states that it wasnt as much that she left but she had other things to attend to in Ladylake. Mikleo butts in and says it may have been for the best since she did not have the proper ressonance and was sucking away Sorey's energy and hurting him physically. Mikleo then informs Rose that due to the amount of time Alisha had spent as an improper Squire to Sorey, he was beginnning to lose his eyesight and would soon go blind among other possible ailments. Rose begins to freak a little and ask if she would end up doing the same to Sorey. Lailah reassures her of her powerful ressonance saying that he would be fine and she is a suitable partner for Sorey.
Alot of little tid bits of info about the plot are found in those prompted skits. There are over 300 of them so thats alot to hear about the plot. This was among them
Most of what was said back in October based on bad translations has since been shown to be exaggerated by now anyway (eg the idea that she was shown in many battle locations she left before the party reached; it was just pearloats pasture in one picture in the same event which showed the game logo where Rose was more prominent).
I was writting a long post in the subject marking all the iinconsistencies, plot holes, wasted efforts, etc but decided to start a new game on + mode instead... with knowledge of the whole story, a rewatch of the first hours of the game and seeing the great lenghs they went to introduce Alisha's character, create her relationship with Sorey, set her place in the world, her enemies, carefully mananing both Sorey and her "power ups", among many other things, it is just plainly obvious that the original story was thought of as having her as the companion for the whole of Sorey's journey and grow up along the way...
of course she was naive and unsecure at first, much like sorey, she had led a sheltered life (even worse, as we learn the truth about her mentor)... in a coming of age story like this, the characters usually start like that, and the beauty of those stories is watching them overcome trials and mature as a person...
As for Rose, the opposite happens... her interesting plot about the assassin's guild and their ambiguous intentions gets resolved instantly and sacrificed in the need for her to join up instantly... their whitewhahing is so absurd it breaks immersion really bad...
And not to mention she literally starts at "max level," so sadly we never get the chance to see her grow up either in power or as a character...
I just love her bubby, cheerful and carefree personality. and some of her skits and interactions with the rest of the cast are awesome, which makes her complete lack of development truly sad...
I can't honestly say why the story went in the direction it went... wheter it was to sell a DLC or any other reason, we'll probably never know... it does seem at least interesting that their move to quell the masses was to give the DLC for free instead of charging for it, almost like an admission of guilt... again though, this is is just speculation on my part...
I think that they separate was a good point, because she was hurting him - however, later on it would have been better if Alisha returned. Rose could still join. It would not make a difference if she or/and Rose would be able to fuse with the Seraphim.
However, Sorey's burden due to Alisha should have gotten more focus (aka a longer "hidden" arc) which in return would have made the separation more emotional and meaningful.
As I already said, later on, she could come back. Or before returning for real be there every now and then.
I wonder how much of the story they did change. I like ToZ, but the feeling, that they could have done something better, is still here.
