Perils of Man is a nice point&click adventure game. It offers quite good story combined with good puzzles and pretty artstyle.

You play as a girl who wants to uncover the secrets of her father who was a scientist and disappeared long time ago. The story involves altering the time which will let you to explore very different environments and interact with with wide variety of characters.

The gameplay is the usual point&click style. Although the puzzles are pretty interesting. At times it might become a bit annoying with all the backtracking but it's worth it.
Barely anyone noticed this game and in my opinion it's underrated. It's not a masterpiece or something you will remember for your whole life but it has something which makes it feel like one of those the clasic point&click games, it has that vibe. Probably because it was a collaboration with ex-LucasArts developers.

Of course there's a lot of talking too and the game has some sense of humor. You'll meet some interesting characters and have a pleasant (or not) talk with them. You also have your little helper.
This game requires paying attention to a lot of things but once you figure it all out it feels rewarding. Although sometimes i'd like some hints or something because walking back and forth while trying to figure it out could be tedious. Nevertheless most puzzles are really good.

Graphically it looks quite good. I know I usually say 3D point&click games are bad but this one probably is one of the better looking ones. While graphics are nothing special the artstyle compensates for it. Character design is really good.

Voice acting is surprisingly good and I have no complaints here. Plenty of different characters and they all sound original.

Overall a good point&click game. It has lovable characters, cute graphics, interesting story and puzzles. Get this on sale.

The Point and Click adventure game Perils of Man (or The Perils of Man, if they make up their minds), by IF games, takes you on a journey through time. You play as Ana: after getting a present from her missing father, she wants to learn more about the gift, about him and try to find where he is now.

The game in itself is nice and short, controlled mainly by the mouse, though you can use your keyboard to call up the inventory, which was handy. The graphics might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I rather liked them – they have a bit of a cartoony look to them, and also reminded me a little of Coraline for some reason (however, Perils of Man has nothing to do with it). The 3D renditions of them move nicely, though I did miss the ability to run on double click, and in a couple sections they did bug out and ‘slid’ rather than walk. But I’ll go more on that later. The music was a delight to listen to, although I do wish it would have stopped when the game wasn’t in focus or was minimized. The sound effects and voices were really, really nicely done, making the game quite charming.

The dialogs and just the overall feeling of it all was reminiscent of the adventure games of old, just in a slighter… easier way. The puzzles weren’t as challenging, but they were pleasant to play through all the same. There was no oblique thought going into it about forming strange things to use as other things, all item mixing was logical and/or explained somewhere if it didn’t seem overly logical.

I do have to say my computer, as it’s not extremely powerful, tends to lag a bit on videos, and unfortunately lagged on Peril’s videos as well. Normally I try to skip them (which you can do here) and watch them later (after I’m done with the game) on youtube, or make a second play-through if the game wasn’t too long to see it with all the laggy cutscenes, but I found it hard to do with Perils, for the cutscenes contained only not parts of the story, but entire clues on what you had to do next. This was quite troublesome to me. As much as I love to watch carefully crafted cutscenes, what I like more about games is often to play them, after all. However, the cutsecnes weren’t too long, so if the videos work well for you they are worth a watch for the clues and the story alike.

As for everything else, Perils of Man ran quite fine in all chapters except one when she’s on a ship in the sea; the storm in the back lagged it terribly and it was quite a torture to get through it. It lagged even when the storm wasn’t seen through any of the ships windows or portholes, which was even more annoying.

Another thing that was really bothersome was a section in the theater, there is an area that links the furnace and cisterns, but unless you click in a very precise area, the camera won’t follow you even when you hear Ana walking away out of sight. I was pretty sure I clicked all over to no avail, and in the end had to turn to the forums for help. It wasn’t really a bug, but it wasn’t very well thought out either. What was a bug though was getting stuck in a couple areas on invisible walls, just because I tried to do two actions too fast. Then she would refuse to walk but you could still hear the steps sound effect. She would also end up walking but then not want to accept any further commands – no leaving the area or clicking on another item unless you reloaded the game. It wouldn’t had been so annoying if it hadn’t all started happening after I got “stuck” trying to enter the cistern, which had already frustrated me quite a bit.

Fortunately the game auto-saves (apparently) fairly often, so I didn’t experience any loss when I had to do the reloads.

Those little pesky bugs ended up taking away a good deal of my enjoyment of the game, hence I give it a lower rating than I would have if my play-through had gone smoothly. (I would’ve probably gone for a 9/10 instead of 7/10)

Despite that, the game is fun, the story is interesting and the ideas in it good, although I do feel like the ending didn’t quite resolve things entirely… and it reminded me of the good old adventure games of old, which is always nice.

I definitely recommend it, and hope you don’t encounter the bugs I did.

Meh ... I feel mixed about this one. I suppose if you really want another point-and-click in your library, or you love them all, then this is for you. The best way I can think of to describe the art and animations would be "goofy." It is also lacking in QC (sensitive hot points, funky camera, dialogue and its choices, some animations). The story is OK, but it builds to a choice you don't actually get to make, as the dialogue options end and the cut scenes begin. Overall, for me, it was certainly worth the sale price at 90% off.

I really wished I could recommend this game, but after 8 hours of mostly unsatisfactory clicking around, I decided I cannot. I could have stopped earlier and ask for a refund, but I generally try to support indie efforts, so there it goes...

The game is nicely designed and the story had a lot of potential, that being the main reason I bought it, but ultimately fails to deliver on almost every aspect:
- the hotspot finding is a pain,
- poiting the character in a certain walking direction is nerve-grating
- the puzzles are not entertaining and you get the feeling they are there just so you have something to do in the game. It gets boring fast.
- very shallow and short interactive story

The game is about 10$, which I supposed could be justified by the quality graphics and animation, but not for the quality of the game or its length.

Only buy on sale and if you're really aching for a point and click.

If you like adventure games, you are ought to enjoy this short, flawed little gem. It is obviously suffering from lack of proper funding, but the story about a young girl discovering her time-travelling family’s secrets holds a few enjoyable moments.

As unoriginal as it sounds, a family of inventors who discover time travel and the means to predict dangers can be a foundation for a great adventure series. For the most part, Perils of Man tries to follow up on this as much as it could.

The game feels tight-budgeted at many points. The cast is small and the protagonist, Ana takes the vast majority of screen time. Even though her story is about discovering a mysterious time-travelling device that can show risks and using it to investigate the strange disappearance of her father, we have only a handful of stages, often with subpar texture quality.
However, the characters, especially Ana feels like something straight out of an adventure cartoon series, and she does a wonderful job at carrying the story, although the poor sound mixing hurts her voice acting quality.

Game design is a decent job with great pacing and the type of average puzzle design we can expect from those all-age indie point ‘n’ click adventure games that do not try to torture their players with sadistic moon logic. Therefore, Perils of Man should suit any adventure game fan, even if its ending is a bit more unnecessarily darker than its visual style or narrative could handle.

I got this as a Christmas gift from a friend (thank you for that, you know who you are!)
So I thought to myself you know what, I feel like playing a point and click as it's been a while.
It is rather short so I do hope they will bring us more of this story eventually as I’m still filled with certain questions (so maybe one day a prequel, sequel, part two,..?)

The story itself is very lovely to walk through and follow.
I rather do not reveal anything about it to not take away the full experience of discovering everyone and everything yourself.
The music, sound and voices really sets the mood of the game.
And the graphics, well they may not be top notch “as we all expect today” but they where fairly good.
With an occasionally small mini odd glitch here and there, but hey that might just be my not so good computer to be fair.
So it was easy to look passed that as it did not bother me.

I would pick a super story line over any graphics rather then a high end graphics game with a bad story line.
I chuckled, I almost cried, I gasped, I cursed when I was stuck, etc.
And therefore after playing it out I would recommend it to the PaC fans.

Perils of Man (PoM) is a delightful adventure of discovery, following Ana as she unravels deeply buried Eberling family secrets in search of her missing father. There is an underlying emotional resonance that grows as the story progresses covering topics like regret, sacrifice & how ones decisions often impacted other family members. Although this may sound dark, PoM is actually a rather warming story, often taking the innocent perspective of youth. The mystery unfolds at good pace, with some twists as you would expect with anything involving time travel!

There is a lot of personality in PoM, from the adorable Swiss accent of Ana & the quirky steampunk sidekick, Darwin, to the comic artistic style & animations. Scenes are vivid & varied. Characters are unique & interesting, offering a good dose of humour that never really left me lacking.

What did leave me lacking though, was the quality of the many rendered cut scenes at key story points. The content was fine, animations fine, vocals fine etc., actually would even say good, but the low resolution & laggy/clucky/blurry playback was shocking! The game was locked running solidly at 60fps @ 1080p on my PC, but the videos felt like they were encoded 10 years ago running at 10fps @ 800x600 resolution. I found this noticeably poor quality compared to the rest of the game, although sometimes it was less noticeable than others, it certainly detracted from the experience.

An unusual & rather unique addition to PoM is the first-person mode. Not something you normally see in a point & click adventure game, it adds the ability to search for clues in a scene outside of the fix camera by using a device called a Risk Atlas. Although I like the premise, in practice I didn’t like it too much. Besides making things too obvious, it also highlights the hollowness of some of the rooms. Outside of the fixed camera areas many of the scenes were basic & rather empty.

Throughout my play through, there was only a couple of sections that got me stuck for a reasonable time; Even then it wasn’t long. PoM won’t be frustrating to play, & certainly the puzzles are well suited to new players to adventure game genre, casual gamers or even children. There is even a clue system included to help guide you along when you get stuck.

I found it unfortunate that PoM was over just as I felt I was really getting into the story. The final 20-30% goes quickly & could have benefited from a meatier & more challenging conclusion. It left me wanting a bit more, wishing for another chapter to delve a little deeper into the story. There are still questions unanswered…

Despite some shortcomings I had fun, enjoying the strange story & rich characters PoM had to offer.

If you enjoy classic point and click adventure games, especially if you enjoyed the incredible "The Raven" which came out recently, DEFINITELY take a look at this gem.

It takes a little bit (getting past the first half hour of gameplay) to really get into it and used to the gameplay, but once the story kicks in, you won't be able to stop playing until you beat the game. Which will take an average adventure game player 3-4 hours in total - longer if you stop to smell the roses.

I found a few things to be a bit clunky though. Mainly the click to move, which wasn't as fluid as I'm used to, after being spoiled by such masterpieces as the Sherlock Holmes series by Frogwares, and the aforementioned "The Raven: Legacy of a Master Thief". I'd guess the movement awkwardness is due to the game being originally made for touch control - as it was released first on the iPad app store, AFAIK. A few of the puzzles might not be as obvious either, especially at the very beginning, when you're first learning the game's puzzle logic style. Again, once you get past the first half hour, and access the basement, things will start clicking until the game is complete.

The graphics are very charming, with engaging cutscenes and gorgeous environments and characters. The voice acting is quite funny - though I'm not sure that's always intentional. I wish the accent/voice work could've been as exceptional as Broken Age's/TellTalle games/Sherlock Holmes: CP/Ethan Carter/etc, as that would've made this game much more solid. The accent kinda sounds like an American imitating a Swiss/British accent, which can be kinda jarring at times. Some voice work/actors do a better job than others though.

The story is the strongest feature of this game, and is quite original and glorious. Much philosophical musing, and deep plotting awaits, with a good amount of emotional gravitas.

All in all, this game is well worth the affordable $10 ticket it carries. It's one of the better adventure games to come out this year, though not quite the caliber of Telltalegames or Frogwares best fare.

4/5 - Strong Recommend, especially for adventure game enthusiasts.

This game defines Point N Click Adventure. Everything about it is a joy to play. I loved every moment from beginning to end. Lots of interesting locations and characters. A pretty cool involved story. A couple of the puzzles were either far reaching or didn't make sense at first so I consulted the walkthrough a couple of times. And it really could use a hotspot indicator. And the common complaint for almost all P&C games is we all wish they'd allow WASD control. Otherwise this was exactly what we're all looking for in a P&C Adventure. Play on playas!!

I enjoyed the puzzles for the most part, but the story wound up being disappointing. Without spoiling anything, suffice it to say that some of the central mysteries of the game are never resolved.
