I figured we were "buying" specific engrams from whatever implanted the wrist device which then 3d prints what the engram contains with our materials.
At the 18:35 mark of this Gamasutra video from 2017, the interviewer starts with the question of engrams to Jeremy Stieglitz. Jeremy states that the concept idea for Engrams was inspired from Scientology but he states he's not a Scientologist but found the idea of engrams in its belief system interesting:
