Byzantine Empire 1.4
Beat the Ottomans, gobbled up the Karasids, rebuked an invasion by Naples, halved the Serbs and defeated the civil war...now I'm utterly ruined! Endless debt spiral, can't increase crown power, inflation through the roof, even with spending at zero i'm still losing money each month. Barely gaining stability (0.13) legitimacy in the negative.

Can this be turned around?

Haven't played the game in a while, but i remember Byz had that awful "pronoia" reform that enables a special vassal type, but lowers max tax by -10. I always got rid of that ASAP. Don't know if that's still the case.

Also hey started with "corruption" reforms on all estates. The one on the peasants also was terrible (lower estate satisfaction i think). So getting rid of that was also high priority.

Can't fix the country if noone pays taxes, basically.

After those, it usually became quite easy to keep economy afloat. You literally have a gold mine - that alone can carry a lot of the burden early on. I built a bailiff there and a governor in the city next to it (and a road between the provinces) to get the max out of it.
My runs in 1.4 get ruined since egypt expands heavily in the first 20 years in turkey and egypt alone is just OP :D
Yes, it is possible. I play Byzantine Empire since 1.4 beta in ironmen mode. In 1620 I am a superpower. By the way, a bankrupt situation is not the end. You even could use this game mechanic to your advance.

That's cool. Any pointers for getting a decent start in version 1.4?
You might be better releasing some vassals and having them pay you tribute instead of owning them directly until you get your estates in order.

Also this patch you need to sort out food as a priority
