the characters are not operating in the game based on their art portraits.
I don't have an issue with it, but I think you might have gotten scammed if you were told they were handdrawn
I'm not convinced they are generated. But a good way to know this, as a paying client, is to request images (in addition to regular images that you actually would use) that retain the working layers. It's pretty easy to see if actual work was done if you check the layers.
Edit: upon further investigation, at least some are def AI
I love seeing the dislike of AI art. I'm very outspoken over my dislike of it. I hate that it exists. Seeing this thread I thought It'd be nice to give some context to the situation and show some process stuff to show that none of this is AI.
Here are some links to some process gifs on some of the portraits.

Art is very expensive. I am a fulltime freelance artist ( artstation.com/samma ) and it's quite rare that solo indie developers commission artists to work on their game. This kind of game is not made on a AAA or AA budget. There are more than 80 portraits in the new pack and for me that meant having to find a workflow that allowed me to stay within that smaller budget. If anything, the fact that Zarkonnen decided to go this route shows his dedication to create something handcrafted and human. We tried to create unique and fun characters and even though there may be some small inconsistencies that you picked up on, we're really excited about them.
Bonus: I also had a lovely art school intern that wanted to learn how to do portraits. I mentored her while including her in the process. Here are some paintovers I did of her work. https://gifyu.com/image/SWXpO
She said she learned more from this project than her whole time in art school which is both sad for the school and nice to hear for me :D
Didn't you know? Everyone on the internet is now an expert on AI generated art.
