Yasuke was a samurai
Yasuke being a samurai is a well-known fact, but given that there are still alt-right incel revisionists denying history, I figured I'd drop some receipts so that others can share them easily.

As the first foreign-born samurai, he is honestly a fascinating character.

No what is revisionist is crediting absolutely everything in history to black people yet for some reason giving zero attention to actual African history. Like seriously why does everyone else's history need to be taken away, they have an entire continent. Are you really saying that there's nothing we can do to represent them authentically?
I agree from what I have read Yasuke would count as a Samurai. The only reason he is in this game though is because he was cherry picked out of the historical background because he was black and no other valid reason.

I disagree. I think it's because he has the unique standing of being foreign and also engaging in Japanese culture. Prime real estate for an Assassin's Creed character.

Sources written by Thomas Lockley. LOL

He's been exposed as a historical revisionist.

Assassins Creed games are about being a stealthy assassin. Yasuke would stick out like a sore thumb. That aside, he had no historical contribution other than as a curiosity. There were much more significant foreign Samurai including, god forbid, whites. I am not arguing to for a white a protagonist either because that also wouldn't fit the game's setting and be as bad in the game as Yasuke. They should have just left it with Naoe or if they absolutely had to have a second character, a fictional Japanese Shinobi.
Let's be real Japanese history often gets romanticized or reshaped depending on who's telling the story. Yasuke's short time in Japan makes it tough to pin down exactly what happened, meaning more than one version of events could be true. Nobunaga was well-known for giving samurai titles based on skill rather than family background, which upset Mistuhide, the person who eventually betrayed and killed him. So it's possible Yasuke was never officially a samurai or perhaps was briefly given the title before it was taken away by Nobunaga’s successor.

Claims that Yasuke was just a slave are simply not accurate and rooted in racism. He was clearly recognized as a respected warrior among his own people and deserves to be remembered beyond simplistic or prejudiced portrayals.
The was he wasn't he this or that is a stupid point for both sides to be arguing over, him being a real historical figure is the reason he shouldn't have been one of the protags. The whole point of playing fictitious characters from the first entry up to Valhalla was that there was no historical record of them, the Assassins reside in the shadows. If they wanted a playable Black or mixed Samurai they could have made up a fictitious son of Yasuke as a protag.

So what you're saying is; this would have gone over better if he was an assisting character/NPC like they did with Leonardo da Vinci?

Like all the historical figures of the previous games

Absolutely right. We can debate Yasuke's samurai credentials all day. Based on the Spanish/Portuguese Jesuit chronicler of Yasuke, he doesn't look like a samurai to me. But there's nothing wrong with embellishing what we do know about Yasuke and making historical fiction. Yasuke's small appearance was handled quite well in Nioh 2. My contention is that the writing and acting here looks bad.

Ghost of Tsushima was barely historically accurate at all. The tension between samurai honor and proto-ninja-like cunning that haunts Lord Sakai and Jin can scarcely be called accurate.

Samurai studied shinobi manuals and used stealth and cunning and poison darts all the time. They did less than honourable things. They didn't challenge a fort of Mongols to fight one and one in the open when they were at an incredible disadvantage. The tension makes for an incredible game though. It felt like a authentic Samurai cinema mixed with the western super hero genre.

Yasuke was a Samurai as much as Bob Geldof is a Knight and Marcus Rashford a Doctor.
I love how everything these people don't like has to be alt-right.
Facts are now "alt-right" if they don't like the truth. It's ridiculous.
