Mod for equipping a melee and range weapon at the same time
is there one? i think that would be rather realistic..

both serve a different purpose

sidearms lets them remember and select the appropiate tool for work and engangement range.

dualwield on the otherhand lets you use 2 (allowed) weapons at the same time while applying a malus to their performance for going akimbo.

In this case Dual Wield does allow wielding a pistol and one handed melee weapon at the same time, and colonists will use them intelligently depending on the range, and yes there is an accuracy penalty for doing so and this prevents a pawn from using a strong rifle/shotgun and like a zueshammer at the same time. It's another option, with a different kind of balance, just thought I'd mention it.

They do work together I believe, allowing for two different sets of dual wielded weapons for example, I think. I don't use Simple Sidearms though so I'm not certain.

And I don't use Dual Wield, so I can't say how they integrate into each other. Summing up Simple Sidearms, though, it's less about using two weapons at the same time and more like carrying multiple weapons around, like carrying a short gladius along with your bolt-action rifle, or a pistol with a sniper rifle. Pawns will switch between the weapons based on skill, engagement range and the stats of the weapon in question. By default only light weapons can be used as sidearms (leaving you with one heavy weapon that gets dropped when switching weapons, and one or several light weapons for backup). You can also manually tell pawns to switch weapons, which is good if you have a dedicated grenadier with EMP grenades, smoke grenades, frag grenades, et cetera.

Oh yeah, also worth noting is that if you have "weapons" that give bonuses to work stats, like construction speed or surgery success chance or plant cutting speed, Simple Sidearms will also switch those out when doing relevant tasks if set up as sidearms.
