It's made with Unity: http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/rimworld-dwarf-fortress-in-space.200683/

And the RimWorld FAQ shows so too: https://ludeon.com/blog/faq/

I believe there was also a deal on Tynan asking permission from the "Prison Architect" devs due to it being very similar etc.

Okay, long answer. Why it sux, in my taste:
1. Thousands of bugs, nobody cares of. Minor ones for windows versions, but major for non-ones.
2. Telemetry. Just read your ♥♥♥♥♥ manual the unity's eula. Simply, when you launches ANY unity-based game, it "calls home" with lot of info about you, like its not game engine, but spyware. There is no option to turn it off, afaik. Obliviosly, win10 users wont care about it, but others, like me, do.
3. C#. Yeah, you can write game ever on javascript, but, in my experience, its one of reasons, why unity games are laggy af. Also engine itself contains lot of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

There are lot as hell engines in this world (not only 3d, like unreal, but lots of 2ds too, plus you always can make your own with sdl), so - I have no idea, why lot of indie developers still uses unity :/
Lol, wannabe arm-chair developer =)

another guy talking about his "very important personal info *crybaby*", lags in game which can be played even on calculators and thousands of invisible game engine bugs existing only in his head

Here is why OP doesnt know what they are talking about.

1. No engine is bug free, none what so ever, you tell me a game engine ill tell you its bugged. However thats not the biggest issue with what OP is saying here because 99.9% of bugs in games made with the unity engine are the game creators fault not unity.

2. I get it, they didnt ask for permission to send your hardware stats to themselves. As an end user myself i would like an option to turn this off or on, if for nothing more than personal peace of mind. That being said I know what data they are sending to themselves and for what purpose and guess what its the EXACT same data that steam has already sent to itself for the exact same purpose, quality control. Steam already took this data without asking, yet you still use steam, but if unity does it well then unity games are crap.

3. First off, what experiences are these? Can you please post some games that are laggy as a result of being coded in c# and not because of poor optimisation on the programmers part? I have a feeling you dont actually know how many really big games have been built on unity and dont suffer from the issues you are complaining about so here ill post a like to the big games built on unity.

4. Rimworld is not a HUGE game, in fact had you not gone and looked at what this game was built on you would have no idea. Please inform yourself.

@Mystomex: Well said sir!
3 words, Kerbal Space Program
1 word. Hearthstone.

I mean, If blizz is gonna use it (And they have a history for making solid as ♥♥♥♥ games) then whay makes you too good to use it? Not to mention, I'm sure you have a few games in your library that use it and you just don't know. Stop looking for reasons to ♥♥♥♥♥ and be pretentious and either buy the game or move on. I've been playing this game for years and have never seen a crash unless I added mods incorrectly, or even that many bugs for that matter (Most the dev fixed, so hey, must not be the engine).

I kind of agree with you in regards to Unity. I ahve experienced many, major isue with OTHER games that used the Unity engine.

However, I have already played a few thousand hours of RimWorld. And Tynan has contiuned to improve the games performance as it developed over the years. I would NOT have played that much had i continued to experience bad Unity related bugs/crashes while playing RimWorld.

I hope you do give it a try.. & i hope its 'bug/glitch/crash' free for you. I can't recomend this game enough to new players who like brutal games & don't care too much about UBER graphics.

I can assure you, it runs exceptionally well. I have an unusually ♥♥♥♥ computer, and despite that, it runs very well.
good for you, but it wont throw away problems 1 and 2

You speak as if you know the game and have a hundred hours in it already, my friend :) I can tell you one thing, this game has very few bugs. Oversights and things to polish? It has those, but bugs? I don't think so.

About calling home... If you are a millionaire or have huge assets to protect, I guess I can get behind that. But if you are an average Joe (or worse) like 90% of the people on this planet, I sincerely doubt you have anything to worry about...
